Tax credits

After being made a single mum recently I've had to make a claim for tax credits based on my self employed earnings as a childminder.
My income ranges from £5200 to £7k a year after deductions. I am also a carer for my disabled son so my hours are limited to school hours and term time only mostly hence the low wage.
I've been sent a huge list of evidence HMRC require. Is this normal??

Yes.

HMRC are particularly thorough will self employed sole traders because it is very easy for us to take undeclared 'cash in hand' payments.

In your case, they probably also want to check what benefits help you might be getting as a career for your son.
