Have a new au pair starting. I completely failed with our first as gave her too little to do.
Could anyone give me some kind of list of what they expect.

Hi Friendly

Never done the aupair thing but just starting to recruit. There are some good threads out there already which cover what people do and there are three good websites.

i havent got a clue.... Im a nanny and a nanny who doesnt DO cleaning!

My idea of what you could ask an au pair to do would include

loading / unloading dishwasher...
sweeping kitchen floor for crumbs after evrey meal (if you have young / messy toddlers, maybe less frequently for slightly older children who dont generate so much mess!)

family washing and ironing

Regulary hooveering / sweeping of other rooms in the house and keeping areas generally clean and tidy!

hmmm my mind i balnk now...

I know my aunt is about to emply an au pair... she has 3 children aged 4 and under and 1 about to start school in september

they are expecting their au pair to:
Tidy away the breakfast things in the morning (the children will be gone by 8.15 am)

a few small household chores for a little bit during the day... basically keep on top of hooverig the main rooms and ensure the bathroom is clean / do a bit of ironing.

Have a few hours off

pick up 4 (nearly 5) year old from school and look after him at home for an hour and a half until they return with the youngest 2 from nursary..

help with basic meal prep. (they all sit down and eat a freshly prepare meal prepared my aunt each evening) participate in the meal, ie all eat together

tidy the kitchen after dinner while mummy and daddy bath the children and put them to bed.

they are a family who are rarely there at home so it shouldnt be too hard to keep clean!
