So are nannies/mother's helps hideously expensive then?

How much do you reckon a three day a week, live-out nanny would cost me (I live in the South West). And do you have to provide them with a car - or do you insure their car??

are you going back to work Enid?

chipkid · 11/06/2007 14:01

I have a nanny for 3 days in the North. £7.00 per hour gross is the mimimum for a live out in my experience.

I am at work three mornings a week already. dd3 goes to nursery. It is a really nice nursery but...

also dd2 starts school in Sept and will be finishing at 12 for the first term...

Also in south west, I pay £10 ph for three days - though are going to cut back now due to, ahem, financial restraints - and this worked really well. She'd collect dcs from school - in one of our cars, insurred for her - and when dcs not around she did cleaning and all sorts of marvellous things while I sat about in here pretending to work.

Not a 'nanny' as such more a mother's help, but very fabby and does lots of 'craft' with dd when she's around.

hi!

This is an ongoing debate, with lots of different opinions, it all depends what/who you want to employ and what you want from your childcarer.

I think for a part time nanny its between 7-10 per hour.Depending on where you live.

A london qualified, registered nanny can cost anywhere between 350-550 net per week.

A mothers help is different to a nanny, and does alot more domestic duties such as your laundry/cooking/cleaning (rather than just the childrens) and generally are employed to help you and work alongside you rather than be a sole charge carer. They are usually inexpereinced and unqualifed but this is ok if your on hand to train/advise them , a bit like an aupair but live out.

Childminders are a great option, they provide a fantastic service in their own home, and are inspected by ofsted.

It really depends what youre after.

I live in Bath Enid. She isn't crap though, oh no, is very glamorous and looking for cash in hand work whilst going through horrid divorce. Has a daughter at uni etc so really something of a find and incredibly kind to dcs and me. She even cooks things for the freezer. Sigh.

Where are you? Are you nearby? People regularly put things up in newsagents windows here, is all very Bath, never saw such a thing in London.

Enid, you need to provide her with a car unless require her to use one. My nanny travels by bus, and then obviously I buy the bus pass. Often live-out nannies will have their own can and then you pay them mileage.

NAnnies come in a wide range of experience, characteristics, and pay scales. You just have to ask around to see what the going rate is. And, obviously, if you are in a position to offer live-in it is much cheaper.

enid, i'm in the south east. about to start employing a nanny/mothers help. aged 20, will qualify (nvq3) later this year. 3 years nursery plus a year's mothers help experience. she'll take home £270/week for 5 days 8-5. hth

InternationalMouseOfMystery · 11/06/2007 15:10

oh and she'll use her own car. we're paying to add business use to her policy and will reimburse mileage (except travel to/from us)

Okay, I'm going to do scout at local pish posh newsagents and see if there's anyone there. Might be worth a try, they might even live down your way.
They call themselves Housekeepers round here though. Or else try an agency?
