So as some of you know, we recently waved goodbye to our lovely nanny of 4.5 years, and hired a new one who for various reasons I had to fire within a fortnight.
I have 4 children, 2 at school fulltime, one at nursery a couple of days a week but will be 4 days in Sept, and a 16mth old. I don't work at the moment, but am waiting to hear about a job which will require about 2 weeks full time training and then be about a day a week. That would a ll start in October. I also have to go abroad probably 2 nights every couple of months on family business.
The school run is a good half an hour each way, requiring motorway driving. Accordingly I've always had nannies, who are 25+, mature, lots of experience, sensible etc. They help with the school runs, help with everything child related (laundry, meals, keeping room and toys straight etc) and do a fair amount of playgroups, music groups, playdates, trips to soft play etc etc.

Current problem - I've interviewed a nanny who seems great. 33, last job lasted 8 years looking after 3 children (two much older than the youngest who she had from a baby, so in recent years looking after just her), also lots of experience with a family who fostered lots of children, really sensible, nice etce tc. Unfortunately she has just taken on a temp job until the end of Sept.

So if we go for her, I need some help for the holidays and Sept. Do I hire an au pair, on the basis that I won't need her to drive the kids anywhere on the motorway, and just have an extra pair of hands around the house? I don't want a live in nanny long term, but I don't mind someone live in just for 12 weeks or so.

So if I get an aupair, do I get one off Great Aupair (which I've registered on and had about 30 responses in 24 hours aurgh), or do I go onto gumtree and find one who is already here and Ican interview, or what do you all reckon? Some of the ones on GreatAupair look nice - 23 yr old Americans (who probably won't be able to drive a manual car, thinking about it), 20 yr old Hungarians with good refs from previous employers... I've never gone the au pair route though so don't know what to look for particularly. I'm also horrified by how little they are paid, but I suppose I have to get over that!

Or I can decide to just look for a nanny who can start earlier... but it is a bad time to look and Id on't have any more interviews lined up.

Anyway if you have read all of this, well done! and thank you. And anythoughts would be appreciated - sometimes it is easier to see the obvious path when it is someone else's problem!

pph I think ggg's dd is looking for a summer au pair job

CountessDracula · 11/06/2007 10:35

Can't you get a temp nanny from an agency?

MrsWobble · 11/06/2007 10:39

I would go for the nice nanny from end Sept and an au pair to cover school hols. One of my friends gets summer holiday au pairs each year as part of her childcare routine and has good results. She always get university students because she wants intelligent houseguests (for more details see IssyMum dilemmas). I think she also tends to go for Western Europeans - there's more chance of a driving licence.

My personal experience of live in nannies is limited to Australian and Eastern Europeans and because we've needed more than school holiday cover the university student route has not been an option.

KaySamuels · 11/06/2007 10:41

The nanny who can start in September sounds great, so would definately stick with her and try and fill your childcare gap over summer. What about a student (perhaps studying childcare), or another mum? Just for over the summer?

squiffy · 11/06/2007 10:58

Get a Swedish au-pair for the summer. The driving tests they do are very intense (they have to drive through an oil slick on a track before they can get their licences, for example). We had a 18YO Swede who drove us mad in many ways but her english was great, her driving perfect (she used to rant for days about english drivers) and DS adored her - lots of carefree playing in the garden (whilst the washing stacked up, admittedly). She had loads of her Swedish friends come visit while she was with us and they all seemed the same - confident, cheerful, trustworthy, never washed up.

We used greataupair.

looneytune · 11/06/2007 11:03

Where do you live? We're in the South East and I'm not sure if you ever saw my thread about au pair who was being treated badly (running b&b, sole charge of 2 under 3's and LOTS more), well, she's looking for a summer au pair job.

looneytune · 11/06/2007 11:04

BTW, she is fab and a very hard worker!

PrincessPeaNips · 11/06/2007 12:50

oh thank you very much everyone!
well concensus to go for nice nanny at end sept (assuming she wants to take us on! haven't found out yet), with aupair for summer
yes I guess lots of univ students will be free until end sept, good point. hilarious about the swedes and washing up but excellent point about the driving. we are so rural that both we and she will go mad if she doesn't hop in the car and go off exploring etc.
cd really? How old is she? I'm a bit nervous about under 20s - have enough children of my own, don't really want to deal with anyone elses
loonytunes we are in north wilts, near the scenic and lovely town of swindon (but also close to marlborough with bath, salisbury, bristol, oxford, cheltenham, cotswolds all within 45 mins drive). trains to london take just under an hour

Go for the nice 33yr old nanny...she sounds lovely....and then get an aupair plus,( they work slighty longer hours and thus you pay more...)....I would go for gumtree approach. That is what we have done, and we have a lovely aussie girl starting in september,( baby no6 due october....she will help resident nanny of nearly 7 years ),who is coming over to France, where we live and working for 5 hours a day x 6 days a week for the euro equivalent of £90 a week ! We were able to interview her in London where she was coming to the end odf a 12 month post also working alongside a nanny for 12 month triolets ! She is 26. No massive payout to agencies either !!

PrincessPeaNips · 11/06/2007 13:18

thanks mozhe
did you advertise on gumtree, or see her advert on there?
and if you advertised, did you have to wade through 85 responses from 17yr old lithuanians??

great aupair is only $60, so pretty cheap really

but I might put an ad on gumtree as well. I'm finding it tricky to find someone on great aupair over 20 who can drive a manual car, has some actual experience with children, and types recognisable english...
I guess the full combo is what everyone wants!

looneytune · 11/06/2007 13:37

did you ever see my thread 'au pair duties - taking the p*'? If you did, you'll know how much work she does!! She's just turned 20, drives an estate car atm (pretty sure its manual)

email me if interested.....info at helenslittleangels dot co dot uk

looneytune · 11/06/2007 13:38

She's from Slovakia but has been au pair over here since she was 17. Her English is GREAT

Pollyanna · 11/06/2007 13:40

pph i have used gumtree with much more success than greataupair.com.

There are lots of au pairs on gumtree looking for summer work (at least round here there is).

mozhe · 11/06/2007 13:42

We reponded to an ad....my sister put an ad in and yes , she was inundated with a zillion replies from people who were currently working in meat processing plants but loved children etc....my other sister put one in and was very, very specific, e-mail replies only...and only got 6 replies, and one of those has been with her for 18 months now !

CountessDracula · 11/06/2007 13:50

looky here

looneytune · 11/06/2007 13:52

Thanks

PrincessPeaNips · 11/06/2007 14:14

hi looney, I've sent you an email! hadn't seen your thread before

OP posts:
looneytune · 11/06/2007 14:16

Oh, well you won't know what a fab multi tasking person she is then!! Afraid I had to get the thread deleted as over time, more and more got put on there and when possible child neglect when mentioned, it was time to get rid!!

looneytune · 11/06/2007 14:17

Just off on the nursery run so will check for email when get back around 3ish

PrincessPeaNips · 11/06/2007 14:17

oh bloody hell
thought it must be bad when you talked about "don't want anyone to abuse her lik her last employer"

OP posts:
looneytune · 11/06/2007 15:19

Oh, well, you don't know the half of it!!! Really quite shocking the way they treat her and all for such a tiny amount a week!!

Haven't had your email? Did you send to correct address? [email protected]? Maybe just email me at [email protected] instead? There may be a delay in the other one reaching me for some reason.

TIA

PrincessPeaNips · 12/06/2007 10:58

well I'm in advanced talks with a 19yr old (almost 20) from San Diego to come and be our summer au pair. She can work until mid Sept. I sent her uwila's frightening list of questions, and she answered them all really well, she sounds intelligent, level headed and mature and nice, eats healthily, is delighted with the salary (£100pw, I couldn't in all conscience pay any less. She's from a very close family with lots of young cousins, has babysat for years, loves the countryside, has been driving long distances for the last 3 years, and can sort of drive a manual car and her dad is going to give her some intensive practice over the next few weeks. Speaking to her and some references tomorrow (she has her final univ exams today). she sounds OK doesn't she?

The nice 33 yr old who isn't avail until end sept is very keen on us apparently, and thinks she will be able to start mid sept, so that might all work well. we are going to have a trial day to double check that we are both happy with each other which would be great.

so things are looking up!

and this week I have my husbands 22 yr old nephew (ie my children's cousin) being an au pair - he is FANTASTIC. Plays brilliantly with them all, cooks, tidies up after himself, has done the school runs, chatted to the teachers and other mothers, and has been fun for me to have around. He draws the line at pooey nappies but there is only one of those a day so no real difficulty in him avoiding it . If he wasn't buggering off around europe in a week or two I'd keep him for the summer!

[btw looneytune's au pair sounded completely wonderful, but was going back home for 2 weeks just when I'd really have needed her most unfortunately. bad luck )
