Hi everyone,

Bit of background info - after my first DC1, I started preparing for childminding but unexpectedly fell pregnant again fairly quickly so postponed my plans but am now starting to think of setting up again.

Worked for years in nurseries, as a nanny etc so fairly happy that I know the realities of what I’m letting myself in for...

So, I got as far as completing my HBCA qualification and last did my first aid in January 2017, so presumably they are both still valid. So can any of you lovely MNetters please remind me of the next steps I need to take in the registration process? My husband is calling our mortgage provider and home insurance provider tomorrow just to confirm that they’re happy with my plans.

My house and garden is fully child proofed and we are bursting at the seams with toys/resources already thanks to my own DC!

But would appreciate reminders of what else I need to do and who I need to contact, just so I don’t miss anything vital! Any help appreciated - thanks!

Obviously know I need to contact and register with Ofsted Grin but is there anything else I should do first?

youll need to write up some policies and youll need some kind of register

business cards

where will you advertise

CarrieBlu · 26/08/2018 07:30

Thanks @walkingted

I’m pretty well known already in this area for childcare through my nannying, I’ve already got some families lined up who I’ve worked with before so not too worried about immediately needing to advertise. There’s a big shortage of childcare around here and from the requests already being made I may have to turn work away. But if not, I’ll use the childcare website and get some business cards printed to advertise in the shops around our small town.

I think I still have my sample policies from my course that I can just edit....hopefully anyway, it will save me a lot of time!

Make sure you are familiar with the new GDPR requirements for data handling, as it’s a significant change from the old laws. Probably quite different from what was covered in your pre-2018 coursework.

Several things which might not be essential at the pre-reg stage, but will be necessary very soon after starting work......

You’ll need to have public liability insurance in place from day one.

Vehicle insurance if you intend to drive with minded children.

I understand Ofsted now automatically register you as a food business. I’d still contact the local EHO for advice before they inspect. THey might require you to do the level 2 food hygiene certificate. Get hold of the FSA pack: Safer food, better business for childminders.

Register with the ICO.

Register as self-employed with HMRC. Be sure to retain receipts for start-up costs to set against your first year's income for tax purposes.

Thanks @itsaboojum, that’s all really helpful and a really good point about the GDPR legislation, I will definitely need to brush up on that.

Does anyone have any experience of having property deeds stating that a business should not be run from the property and whether this childminding counts as a business in those terms?
