After school nanny - how much to pay ?

Well - I just put an ad on Gumtree - for an after school nanny or mothers help - really need a surrogate granny ! Max of 9 hrs per week - three days a week - needs to have own car, collect dd from school, bring her home (maybe with a friend) give her tea, play with her, do art/craft etc. No housework.

How much do you think I'm looking at ?

Where are you located? Will you make a contribution to car/petrol costs on top, or expect it to be covered by hourly rate?

scatterbrain · 14/05/2007 14:19

Hi - we are on the Hampshire/Berkshire border - and yes I would want it covered in hourly rate.

Is the drive from school to home very far? How many miles total per week?

I would imagine you'd be looking in the region of £8 per hour, but I'm not familiar with rates in your area....so someone else may have another suggestion.

Um - school is about 3 or 4 miles from home -country lanes.

£8 you think - hmmmm - will have to see if anyone gets in touch !

Ta very much

I pay mine £8/hour for 3 hours 5 days a week, which seems to be fairly normal around here. She's not a proper nanny mind you - came over here as an au pair 8 years ago and never went back.

Ok - thanks for that - so £8 ish seems to be what I should expect.

Ad still not on gumtree though !

Thanks

Under a long term contract, £8 gross sounds reasonable to me. You may need to up a little to take into account mileage, though will depend on what the person wants of course. Also will depend on when you consider the time starting - as if doing a pick-up, the time could start from when the nanny leaves their home, rather than when they get to school.

Think your advert is now live on Reading Gumtree
Interestingly no salary is mentioned in the advert... so lets you negotiate with people who respond.

Ahhh yes - it appeared at last ! Never used gumtree before - I kind of expected it to pop up straight away - that took about 3 hours !

Will wait and see if anyone comes forward I guess ! Otherwise I'm back to the drawing board again !

Had forgotten about start times - the child minder we had for a while used to start her time when she left home which I always thought was odd as my hours don't start until I reach my desk ! Not sure I quite agree with paying for travel time - but will have to see if I get any takers and cross that bridge when I get to it.

Oh God - am in a dilemma now !!

Have had one applicant - who I haven't spoken to yet - but had a chat with my boss yesterday and he says he is perfectly happy with the hours I am at work - so myabe I don't need to do this !!

Can't really afford to - am only poorly paid civil servant - so every penny counts - and as DD goes into Y2 in September they stay until 4pm in school anyway !

So really I don't need any help - do I ??
