Is this a big au pair no-no?

Considering an extension, and would like to have an au pair in the future. Our roof is shallow so it’s difficult to go up and we don’t have enough bedrooms for an au pair as is. However, it seems likely that we could get planning permission for two rooms and a bedroom in our garden, so unconnected to the house (about20 yards away). We’re so rounded by houses and gardens on all sides so the only access would be through the house. Is such a set up a big no-no for an au pair?

If you would be happy for a young adult family member (say a cousin) to stay there, then it should be fine for an au pair. Some might like having their own space. Assuming it is comfortable, safe and has easy access to a bathroom, of course.

Agree with PP about access to a bathroom.

Our au pair flat is over the garage, it's very popular with older au pairs who want some independence. It's basically a studio flat with a kitchenette and a separate shower room (and some storage).
You need to be careful though with your local authority rules in if it can be considered a separate residence (and therefore subject to a second council tax).
