Difference between vouchers and tax free scheme

I'm currently on Mat Leave due back mid October.

I can opt to do the voucher scheme but need to do this within the next few days otherwise I'll lose this option because the government is ending it from April. I can pay as little as £1 to keep me in the scheme until my return to work. I just can't figure out which scheme I would save more money with the vouchers or the new tax free scheme.

Does anyone else know?

I’d go with vouchers, hmrc couldnt organise a piss up in a brewery never mind 00000’s of childcare accounts. Another absolute ballsup!

Money Saving Expert has a great guide here.

It depends if you are a higher rate taxpayer, if your DH can get vouchers and how much your childcare is. There are some online calculators that will give you an indication

I'm not a higher rate tax payer but my partner is, he can claim vouchers as well but is unorganised so would probably never do it and definitely not before the deadline

Sorry to hijack your thread but I currently get vouchers for my two year old, do I need to register my newborn daughter separately or can I just keep receiving the vouchers once Ds is in school and use for DD when she starts nursery? Iyswim

bookgirl1982 · 02/03/2018 19:43

N you can only claim one lot of vouchers, so no need to register for a second child.

Fab thanks @bookgirl1982 just didn't want to miss the deadline

If your fees can be covered by the voucher limit of one or both of you getting them then for most they are better. If your childcare costs are way more than the voucher limit you maybe be better with the new scheme. IMO the government haven't brought in the new scheme because it's better for us though.....
