Late paying the Nanny. Her bank has charges her £80 fee

We were late in paying our nanny by one day. She had a direct debit coming out on her pay day (yesterday) and because she had insufficient funds in her account they have charged her £80.

Is this excessive or is somebody trying to pull the wool over my eyes!!

NannyL, weren't you the nanny who previously had the horrendous problems with being paid on time? PLEASE tell me it isn't happening again!

Millarkie · 02/05/2007 18:54

Am I the only one who pays the nanny from my previous month's pay then? Nanny's money leaves my account about the 20th of the month to ensure that it is her account in plenty of time for her pay day (last working day of the month), and then at the end of the month I get paid...and it stays in my account until the 20th etc.
I also pay (actually paid since I am nanny-free at the moment) nanny with childcare vouchers but she gets those at the beginning of the month to make sure she has time to send them off and get them credited to her account.
Surely it's just decency to make sure your employee is paid on the day that their contract specifies (if it says 2nd of the month then fair enough)

eleusis - I agree totally that it's outrageous that banks hold onto money for those days whilst it's getting transferred. but when you agree to pay someone on a particular day you are agreeing to ensure they have that money on that day.

ziopin if your contract says she's paid on a particular day of the month then you need to work out what day it needs to leave your account to ensure it reaches her account that day every month. in actual fact this will mean that for some months she'll get it early.

hatwoman · 02/05/2007 18:58

I agree millarkie. I pay my nanny weekly - which is good because it's not effected by weekends or bank holidays ot the length of the month. leaves my account on a Tuesday gets to hers on a friday. the only exception might be Christmas, but so far, the way Christmas has fallen, it hasn't affected it.

PeachyChocolateEClair · 02/05/2007 19:02

we get charged a referral fee (bouncer) they can also take an unauthorised overdraft fee and a misuse of card fee if the direct debit was oe of those you set uip on your card- could be a genuine.

Most employers refund these on being shown prrof.

Most we ever got (WTC mistake ) was £120 for a single payment

I had a nanny job where I was paid monthly. They couldn't get to grips with the banking system, had real trouble getting money to me. It caused me no end of problems. Thenceforth I have been paid weekly.

Yes, mad that the banks are unaware of computer technology that allows instant transfer of funds. Oddly, they take it off you the nanosecond they reckon you owe them....

saltire · 02/05/2007 19:19

Slightly off topic but BoS took a standing order out of my account on SUNDAY. It was set up to be paid on the last working day of the month, but according to them Sunday is counted as Monday. However the cheque I had paid in which was due to clear on Monday wasn't availiable on Sunday because "it's not Monday yet so it's not cleared".
I think it's scandalous how banks play around with our money so much.

NannyL · 02/05/2007 19:38

yes its me who had huge probs being paud for feb

was finally paid on 28th march!, then again at begining of april!

islandofsodor · 02/05/2007 21:02

I'm confused. Were you actually late making the transfer, or did it just take longer to clear into her account than normal. if the former, then you should pay up, if the latter, then tough luck.

The firm I work for pays everyone weekly on a friday. Some people find the money shows up straight away, others have to wait longer. I allow a few days leeway before my direct debits go out.

Eleusis · 03/05/2007 08:06

NannyL, No! Are they still messing you around with late pay? I must say in your case I do think the employer is way out of line.

Regarding what my contract says, I don't think is specifies a date. I think it just says that she is paid monthly in arrears. So know I pay her out of my pay and it will take a few days to clear. It has never been a problem.

MrsWobble · 03/05/2007 11:07

if you bank at the same bank as your nanny you can get instant transfers - we did when we had this problem so the money hit her account the same day it left ours. Wouldn't work for transfers between banks though.

thelittleElf · 03/05/2007 11:09

I thought they could no longer charge you any more than £12 . I would deffy check this out!

sarz · 03/05/2007 16:40

Elf, the £12 thing only applies to credit cards!

sarz · 03/05/2007 16:46

According to my contract i get paid weekly on fridays, in reality i get paid weekly on tuesday by the time it has travelled through cyberspace! This is a nightmare on bank hols as i dont get paid till tuesday and usually i have spent alot during the BH weekend!!!!! And at easter because of good friday, it didnt LEAVE bosses account til tuesday!! I am aware of all this though, and arrange DDs accordingly! (even though i am a 22year old!! you dont have to be 38 to understand how banks work )

sarz · 03/05/2007 16:47

oops, i BH's i get paid wed not tues!! doh!!

nappyaddict · 04/05/2007 11:55

imo if it says you get paid friday it should leave your employers account on tuesday so it arrives by yours on friday.

dmo · 04/05/2007 12:42

ziopin
get your nanny to swop her dd to the 5th of the month this way dd will never be late and you will be ok for feb

mishw · 04/05/2007 12:54

Stigaloid why should she go through the hassle of claiming the money back.

Ziopin I would ask for a copy of her statement for your records and I'm afraid it is down to you to pay the fees.

If her pay day is the 28th, you need to make sure that the money has left your account in time to reach hers on the 28th, otherwise thats not her pay day is it!

I'm not accusing Ziopin by the way, but you;d be amazed how common it is for nannies not to be paid on time. One family I knew of paid their nanny on Fridays, but always managed to forget to get the cash and paid her by cheque which she then had to wait to clear before she could access it, but they wouldn't do a bank transfer as it would have causeed them hassle! Nice family

nannyj · 04/05/2007 18:44

I get paid every Friday and it leaves my bosses account in time to get to mine by the Fri.

Judy1234 · 04/05/2007 19:12

£80 it may well be. Also I pay my standing order to my student children every week and I allow 4 days from the date we agreed just to be sure the money gets from my account to theirs in time, not except it the same day. I think you should change your payment date to the nanny so it leaves your account on 24th each month and then if she's paid early that's a bonus but at least you won't be in breach of contract.
