what's the norm - nanny drives own car, or uses family's?

nanny will be working alongside me, not as sole charge

dh would be happier if she drove her own (small) rather than ours (mahoosive)

will speak to the agency on monday 9we're new to this) but thought i'd ask here for a quick answer

The norm is both some do some dont . But if she uses yours you dont have to pay 40pence per mile for fuel .

I don't think there is ever a NORM as it were when it comes to nannies - we are all so different. (or perhaps I am the only odd one out )

I prefer to drive my own car... I know it responds, know its length width that sort of thing, thus am experienced at parking it. It is also designed for children in mind, my own car seats are in it, so no having to swap car seats around all the time, there are books and things to keep the children entertained.

If working along side you, and you are all going to the same place, it would not make sense to take two cars - so it may depend on what sort of journeys would be done in the car. Think about how often a car would be used. Consider what may be cheaper - as if nanny uses their own car, you should be paying £0.40 per mile to them (for first 10,000 miles per year). Statutory Mileage Rates

thanks both. i say "alongside me" but the reality is she'll make many trips just with ds1. will ask how she feels about using her own car.

as a nanny im happy using my own car!

i have my own car seats etc as well!

Sometimes it irritates me tho like today.... been shopping and the boot is already full up of kids 'stuff' and buggy etc!

Also i can never drive more than 2 friends MAX and then one is squashed in back between 2 child seats! ( I REFUSE to remove my child seats cause its such a faff!)

Also my car is ALWAYS messy... full of toys / raisens etc etc.... but then i cant blame all the 'mess' on the children

so long as you pay mileage allowance (im happy with 25p per mile) then its whatever your nanny agrees to!

A lot depends upon what the cars are like.
A nanny runabout is likely to be some small much less safe car like a Fiat. We have a Renault, the one that wins all those safety award.

PrincessPeaHead · 28/04/2007 18:36

my current nanny has always driven her small car. downside is that 3 is a tight squeeze in the back and her front airbag doesn't switch off. So she's never been able to have all 4 in the car at once, which would have been v useful on admittedly only 1 or 2 occasions in the last 16 months (since dd2 was born)

new nanny is currently between cars, so instead of her getting one which would prob be quite small, we've bought a VW touran which will fit all 4 children in it which she can use in her own time as well.

I swapped in my "spare" landcruiser for it because I didn't think it was appropriate for her to be driving such a mahoosive, expensive (to fuel, tax etc) car in her own time. And because by doing so I got the touran and a 5 figure cheque

PrincessPeaHead · 28/04/2007 18:38

oh and btw current nanny kept car seats in mon-fri and left them at our house weekends (because she would be ferrying friends around and didn't want the carseats littering her house and we have more space to store them than she does!)

and we paid her 40p a mile which does add up certainly here in the country - worked out at about £150 pm

would never have just one car between the two because you may want her to be taking junior somewhere when you are somewhere else. but I assume you are talking about her using a "spare" car

Dominoconner

i have a safe reanault whoch ahs one safety awards too

i also only have safe car seats as approved by which..

in act i ahve some of my own cause I refuse to use the ones my old bosses had that DIDNT do well in the which independant tests!

Quite simply i will ONLY DRIVE in MY car children who are strapped in safely to SAFE (ie the best ones the arnt isofix cause i dont have isofix) car seats full stop! cause IF i crash its ME who has to live with my charges being injured or killed!

I personally couldt live myself if i had crashed and my charge had been in a graco seat that I KNEW was crap in a crash!

Renault on Watchdog - hardly winning safety awards!

However I agree with the principle you may be getting at Domini, which I presume is that if a nanny drives their own car, then the parents should feel that their children safe being in that car.
