CM CLUB How many hours a week do you do?

em28677 · 27/04/2007 13:20

I have 5 mindees spread over 4 days and totalling about 25 working hours a week, going up to 50 hours a week in school hols over 5 days which is lovely as usually get fri, sat and sun off! I was wondering if it is normal to struggle to fill a week with one mindee for 5 days? Everyone that has contacted me only wants 1 or 2 days a week! I am really surprised cos thought it would be other way round and I would struggle to get part timers.

too many!!

lunavix · 27/04/2007 13:23

I have 3 mindees. I do between 10 and 15 hours schooltime a week and roughly 50 doing the holidays.

princesscc · 27/04/2007 13:27

I have various mindees on different days a week too, totally 39.5 hours. Longer during school holidays. I have had full time before and actually I prefer part timers. It means that no day is the same. Just recently, I lost a 3 day a week and at the same time was replaced by a 2 dayer and a 1 dayer! No loss of money, but managed to not have to work during school hours on Wednesdays and Thursdays! Perfect.

badgerhead · 27/04/2007 13:29

I have 7 mindies. 3 under 5's who do 3 or 4 days plus 4 b/a schoolers 5 days a week, & my own 2 dd's. I work full time from 7.45 to 6 pm, although some days are quieter & I only have one of the school age children in the holidays plus my 2 who are 13 & 10.
I used to have 3 full time under 5's but that is rare around here, it is usually part timers whose days slot in with each other really well!

nannynick · 27/04/2007 13:57

Not sure what is typical for a childminder. I am a nanny thus a bit different, but based on hours last week (for nannying and babysitting), I did 73 hours of childcare.

As more and more parents seem to want flexible childcare, I am not surprised that filling up a week is tricky in some areas, especially when parents are not wanting full-time care.

ayla99 · 27/04/2007 13:59

9 mindies also do 7:45 - 6pm but most of these are term-time only. Currently doing 3-4 days in holidays.

Never had a full-timer.

dmo · 27/04/2007 14:01

i do 55hrs per week every week

em28677 · 27/04/2007 14:03

Hi Nick I think that is why i am finding my situation so strange before i had ds i was working at least 60 hour a week not including babysitting on weekends so i think i just assumed that childminding would be just as many hours. Do you nanny for just the one family?

nannynick · 27/04/2007 14:44

Depends what you call nannying really. Main job is 50 hours per week.

Childminding can be similar hours. A childminder I am pals with certainly works 7.30am to 6pm most weekdays. But she is lucky in having several full timers aged under 3, plus several part-time after school.

(sorry to hijack - please can someone go and post on my thread so i feel better? thank you x)

looneytune · 27/04/2007 15:06

I work 46 hours a week at the mo but was working 58 hours not long ago. Just that hours changed slightly with some mindees.

hennipenni · 27/04/2007 15:08

Between 46 and 50 hrs per week.

Tan1959 · 27/04/2007 18:30

I do 50 hours per week, Mon - Fri 7.45 - 6pm. Up until about six weeks ago, I always had Fridays free so am really missing this now - I am finding that cooking in advance for mindees and paperwork is now encroaching on my weekends

PinkChick · 27/04/2007 20:24

at least 45, 1/2 the time, another 31 on top if mindee ones parents are on nights!

eggybread · 27/04/2007 20:37

77hrs this week for 5 days. Including two overnights. 14 children - all part-timers.

maximummummy · 28/04/2007 16:40

mogs0 · 29/04/2007 21:17

I have 4 under 5's part time over 4 days.

I work 40 hours but often do a bit extra. When I was nannying I used to do a minimum of 55hrs plus babysitting on top. This was before I had my ds, when I had lots of energy!!

madge7 · 30/04/2007 17:25

I only have two mindees at the mo,
Wednesday x 1 mindee 10 hours
Thursday x 2 mindees 10 hours
Friday X 1 mindee 10 hours

So, 30 hours!

You know when you fill in the accounts books - when it comes to gas/electric/rent etc - how many hours is classed as full time???

Thanks

NannyL · 30/04/2007 18:25

wow nick you work LOADS! lol

as a nanny i do about 38 hours a week, paid for 40 though

sometimes more

sometimes i babysit extra too but only 1 or 2 times a month!

nannynick · 30/04/2007 18:29

Oh to work 38 hours a week ... only ever had that when in a government job!

nannynick · 30/04/2007 18:35

Childminder Expenses Percentages

40 hours+ is fulltime

If working 30 hours, then it would be 25% Heat/Light, 7% Water/Council

NannyL · 30/04/2007 19:18

I used to be paid for 50 hours yet only work 20 / 22..... agh those were they days! lol

lay ins and early finishes EVERY day

trunkybun · 30/04/2007 20:32

maggi · 01/05/2007 14:09

I do 35 hours daytime and 21 hours night time. But that's just the hours that the children are with me, we all know that the hours are mush longer than that.

I spend 7-10 hours attending/travelling to courses and 3 hours homework/research for them.

I spend 1 hour a day doing cleaning/bed changing/car cleaing over and above what I would do if I wasn't working from home.

I spend 4 hours a week planning activities or doing paperwork or having reviews or talking to other professionals or interviewing parents or visiting the scrap store.

Then there's the times I think of something whilst I'm out shopping and make a little side trip to get it.

All in all this comes to 77 hours (hopefully I am asleep 16 of them though).

I wanted to do childminding to stay at home and have time with my own children
