Do you need to have a down stairs loo to become a childminder?

Strange question I know? but do you??

I am a school teacher, but I am finding in increasingly tough sorting out childcare for my 2 little ones

Am considering becoming a childminder, what are the average going rates (cardiff) and how many children can you care for?

Can you make a good living?

i havent got one (would love one)
most of my mindees are in nappies or use the potty at the mo so its not an issue
but no you dont need a downstairs loo

no, but would love one

I recently asked about rates in Cardiff/Newport and it seems to be about £3-£4 per hour, per child.

As for how many children you can have, this will depend on how many of your own children you have and the size of your home.

I am registered to have 2 children aswell as my own ds. This is because I live in a 2nd floor flat. The maximum numbers you can be registered for are 3 under 5yrs and 3 between 5 and 8 yrs.

I used to be a nanny and am now earning more than the average nanny rate by minding 2 children each day.

How old are you children - you can only have 3 under 5

mosschops30 · 26/04/2007 15:10

ziopin they are in short supply in cardiff where are you? took me ages to find a good minder especially if you are willing to do odd hours (lots of nurses like me looking for minders)

most in cardiff charge a daily rate of about £30 or £22 for a half day rate, didnt find anyone that charged hourly

No but God would love one its been constant potty training the last few months

I havent got one yet but will have when we move in a few months! (so excited about that more than anything else!)

I'm not sure i would give up a teachers wage to be a cm tbh. You are still working with children (not your own though, i understand why you would be considering)

At the moment (not for the first time since i started) i'm only earning £100 a week. Don't want to put a downer on the idea for you just saying the money isn't consistant.

The most you are likely to earn is £20,000 and thats if you are full all the time (someone correct me if i'm wrong) where as, as a teacher isnt your earning potential up to £50k?

If money isn't important and you're doing it because you love children and want to be at home with your own then its a fab idea. Being a teacher has to give you an advantage over other cm's in the area you're in i would think. Good luck either way.

Going rate is £3/hr where I am (Devon).
A downstairs loo is essential for me more than the children (pelvic floor shot).
Very useful although not essential for the children too.
I childmind part time and make a good living although it's all relative to your expenses. I also have another secure and well paid part time employment.
If you want to stand out as a very good, and therefore hopefully in demand childminder you will have to spend a lot of money and time on setting up resources and won't make so much of a profit for a while.
I would recommend first reducing your hours in your teaching job if possible, gong through the process to register, and then seeing how you like childminding. It's a lot different from how I first rose-tintedly imagined it to be before I really got going. It's bloody hard work. I expect it's tough teaching too, so you will know and be prepared for how many extra hours you need to put in away from the actual hands on childcare hours.

You don't have to have a downstairs loo, but it makes life immeasurably easier!

You can make a very good living out of childminding, but you obviously have to be able to get the mindees. I' ve been minding for a long time, and am fortunate to get most of my work through word of mouth now, and I work darned hard at my job.

You only have to read the threads on here to know that not everyone has enough work (if any), so you have to be prepared to have a flexible income.

mykidzrmyworld · 27/04/2007 10:18

I make a good living out of CMin (moving bk to Cardiff in a couple of months) and I only work P/t childminding before and after school and then more hrs in summer hols.
I will charge the same in Cardiff £3.50 ph as I know the going rate to that area as have a few of cm friends there. Mayb the more posher areas charge more and the deprived areas a little less.
The only thing to say is can u afford not to earn anything for a few months until you get established?? Im going bk to work when I first move to cardiff as i wont be able to afford not to be earning!
good luck in what u decide and keep us posted x
