I need to hand our nanny a letter tomorrow morning giving her a month's notice (redundancy as we no longer need her)..she has known for the last 6 months that it is going to happen so it won't be a shock at least.
I'm trying to think of some sort of nice phrase to use as well as the 'termination of contract with one month's notice' bit..a sort of 'thank you for .... ' but not too gushy.

Any ideas.

Could you not do the official letter, stating the termination date etc. Then write your nanny a glowing reference.

The redundancy letter is only really needed I found (when I got made redundant from a Sale&Marketing job) for the Job Centre, or for insurance payouts. While it may be nice to put lots of things in the letter, it does not really serve a purpose as far as I'm concerned except for making YOU feel better about it.

I feel it would be far nicer if you did:
Termination of Contract Letter
A covering letter, where you said how great they had been.
A written reference that they could use for future work.

Just a thought.

Thanks - you were all very quick!

I'm going to borrow a couple of your phrases methinks!

Nannynick - nanny has said she is going to start a 'book of references' from her babysitting clients as well as regular employers so she'll be getting a reference from us for that.
She has already got a job to go to, and was happy enough when I told her tonight to expect the letter tomorrow
