I have a new one starting today and just wondered if anyone has any rules they go through with older children?

Hi I have a chart of rules which I leave on my fridge with a magnet that I show them when they first start. Nothing too demanding just sharing toys, trating each other with respect, shoes off in house and remembering our manners. Good luck with the new mindee

i have lots of school children and like younger children they need to know the rules of your house. i dont have anything writtern down but the children are told

no shoes upstairs
no litter left outside
take turns on PC etc
dont pick up smaller children
eat only own snacks that are left on a named placemat
no going into bedrooms
no silly play (like jumping off top of slide as babies will copy)

I made a list with the children - we read my existing list & by the time they had finished discussing their ideas it was 3 times as long!

  • We take our shoes off and hang up our coats when we come indoors.
  • We don?t run, climb or play ball games indoors.
  • We don?t stand, jump or climb on the furniture.
  • We sit at the table to eat our meals.
  • We are kind and helpful to other people.
  • We are truthful and honest.
  • We look after toys, clothes, books and equipment.
  • We say or sign ?please?, ?thank you?, ?no thank you? and ?you?re welcome?
  • We say or sign ?I?m sorry? and ?I forgive you?.
  • Only adults may pick up babies and small children.
  • We don?t go outside without an adult. Only adults may open the front door.
  • We hold hands in the street, walk sensibly by the road, and do not cross the road until an adult tells us it?s safe.
  • We tell [me] when we want to use the bathroom upstairs and we come straight back downstairs when we?ve finished.
  • We don?t go into [my] room.
  • We don?t go into dd?s room unless she has invited us there.
  • We don?t go into ds?s room unless he has invited us there.

I asked my schoolies to make a rule list a while ago, which I duly put up on the wall. It probably wouldn't impress Ofsted, as it includes things such as - don't drop babies (they're not even allowed to pick them up!), don't kill each other, don't eat snot, don't break windows, don't strangle the cat ... you get the gist!

In reality, I think any "rules" list ought to be fairly positive (like Ayla's).

Thanks do you mind if i copy paste and print?

Though having met the child that has started I don't think i'll be needing the rules, she is an angel! Her parents are fabulous, we all get on so well it's as if shes one of the family and i only had her for the afternoon!
