hi.. i'm due to start back at work next month (boo). dp works every saturday now (didn't before), i sent a note to my manager requesting not to work saturays as i have no childcare, ds1 currently at nursery and ds2 will be joining him. i've received a letter today asking me to come in and discuss this with her and i feel it implies this may be a problem... so i thought i would do some homework 1st.

do you work saturdays?

how much do you charge?

it won't (or shouldn't) be every saturday, but i do work a rota system, so it could be once a month or every week, it's unpredictable!! the hours would be from 7am till 4pm. i live in dorset, if that helps!

thanks guys, any help would be appreciated

I'm in Berkshire and don't generally work Saturday's. I do the odd ones to help my current families out but I charge £6ph (normal rate £3.80) as I need to make it work my while if I'm going to do it.

There are childminders who do work Saturday's though, it's just I need my family time plus time for my other business etc.

saralou100 · 05/04/2007 12:19

thanx

would that be £6 per child? probably a stupid question, but i'm trying to work out if it's worth my while! i want to build a god case for not working.

keep the replies coming

Where are you in Dorset Sara Im in Dorset, and would charge 6.50 per child on a Sturday (double time) but I dont actually work Saturdays so thats not much help! Dont actually know any CMs that do.

saralou100 · 05/04/2007 12:32

shosha, i'm in poole... thats kinda what i'm hoping that none work saturdays! and i don't blame you...thats why i'm having this conversation after all!

I have a £5 "unsociable" rate that would be per hour per child. I am sure there are c/ms that work weekends but it would be at a premium rate.

Hopefully your manager will be flexible for you!

mumlove · 05/04/2007 12:39

Hi saralou, have looked at your profile and live in the same area. I don't work at the weekends as I find that most people use that as family time, but agree with looneytune that if they do most will charge double time, my fees are £3.25 per hr per child.
Don't know if you have had a look on here

Have noticed that some do weekends if agreed, I would phone them to ask about costs.

It is also best to phone the CIS for a full list as not all childminders are listed on there. If you need some more help you can email me (i'm under poole town on the list Little Rugrats).

ShoshableEggEater · 05/04/2007 12:39

Sara Mumlove is in Poole, couls try asking her what she charges/works so that you have all the ammunition you need not to work.

Were you contracted to work Saturdays ? or are they naow saying you need to?

looneytune · 05/04/2007 12:39

It would be per child, yes. It's not that I'm trying to be greedy - I just don't want to work so do it to put people off tbh.

I think your employer needs to be flexible about days and I'm sure they can't make you do certain days???

ShoshableEggEater · 05/04/2007 12:40

x posts muml

bozza · 05/04/2007 12:41

looneytune couldn't you just say no rather than come up with some inflated cost?

mumlove · 05/04/2007 12:42

I type so slow that everyone else gets in first.

Shosha did you get my email, I am sorry didn't phone yesterday.

ShoshableEggEater · 05/04/2007 12:51

Yes honey replies have you not got it!

looneytune · 05/04/2007 12:57

Bozza, if you read my other bit you'd see that I DO work on OCCASIONS and therefore need a rate for it. It's just it needs to be high enough to justify doing it. Most people don't want to pay that much and if they do, then fine, I'm happy to do the odd occasion!

mumlove · 05/04/2007 12:59

shosha - No email for me. Will check later off to see my mum.

bozza · 05/04/2007 13:00

Fair enough looneytunes - I just wondered.

saralou100 · 05/04/2007 13:01

oooh, thanx for all the lovely responses, they've really helped!

basically i'm a staff nurse and work a shift rota system... i already work a long day on a sunday and dp looks after the kids, so i don't wanna be giving up a saturday too, minimum of twice a month (it should be alternate!) even if dp didn't work.. her problem is that she has 2 other people returning from mat leave wanting flexi hours and 3 going off on mat leave.

i've just sat here and done a rough working out of costs and based on what you have said so far, it will cost more an hour than what i earn, really not worth my while is it!

you guys are giving me the ammo i need!

If it helps for your cost purposes, as a nanny I provide daytime childcare at weekends. I charge £10 per hour, to which as an employer you would need to add on Employers NICs (is paying enough money to go above the threshold) and you would need to run Simplified PAYE (which means you deduct Tax and NI from my salary and give it to the tax man on my behalf).

Let me see if I can do some basic figures for you... 7am to 4pm is 9 hours, so £90 plus Employers NICs. If it's two saturdays a month, that's 24 saturdays per year, so 24 * 90 = £2,160 gross annual salary. Thus £180 per month, which is below monthly NICs threshold £376.99 see page 20 of CA38(2007) for 2007 tax year.

So cost to you as employer would be £2,160 per year (based on 24 saturdays x 9 hours) plus any miscellaneous expenses. At least that is my understanding of how the Simplified PAYE would work.

Flexible working and work-life balance - you may find this helpful in making a case for your employer to be flexible regarding the hours/days you work.

ThePrisoner · 05/04/2007 18:32

I don't work Saturdays and, if someone wanted me, it would be at such an extortionate rate that nobody would be prepared to pay it. (Thinking about it, I don't think any amount of money would make it worth my while really! Lucky for you I don't live in Poole!)

saralou100 · 05/04/2007 20:26

oh nannynick, that all went straight over my little little brain!! but thankyou, and that link is great, i'll examine in further detail when i have a few minutes!

i've worked out that it will cost £120 more per month but i would be on the same money.

it's a no brainer!!
