Language school recommendations?

Our new au pair arrives on Sunday, and is keen to find a language school near us (we're in East London). I have a feeling that a lot of language schools are just money-making and not any good, though I can't quite figure out where I've got this impression from.
Anyway. I wondered if anyone had any recommendations? She'll be free during school hours, and all day on Friday, and most Thursdays, so will have plenty of time I hope to study.

Have a look at the British Council website, they should have a list of accredited schools, which will be reliable in general (they are inspected on a regular-ish basis). I'd also strongly suggest visiting schools you might be interested in to get a feel for what they're like. I'd recommend steering clear of schools that offer lots of English for specific purposes courses (e.g. English for catering etc) if you're looking for something more academic. Hope this helps - let us know how you get on!

Any news?

I looked at the British Council website but most of the courses there seem to be in the region of £100/week which is far too much money for an au pair.

There are three schools I know of in North West London:

theoxfieldschool.com/ on Kilburn High Road. It's around £25-£30/week for 2 hours every day.

If she wants to study for the Cambridge exam then this course in Golders Green is better and costs £40/week - www.kingsleyschoolofenglish.co.uk/

English Express near Harrow Road / Kensal Rise which is also £40/week - english-express.co.uk/

Gus I am in your area. We have a similar situation with ours. Do you mind if I PM you?

Ovienna - not at all, please do. Our au pair has found a local college that does English lessons which she's enrolled at, which seems promising.
