Advice needed re part-time nanny's holiday pay

Hi there

I wondered if any nannies/employers out there could give me a bit of feedback, please? I have not hired a nanny before, and we have just found a lovely one for two days a week, roughly 16 hours in total. How does 10 days paid leave per annum sound? Too mean? Too generous? She will be able to take her holidays when she likes, and be on unpaid leave when we take ours - up to a max of 10 days, thereafter paid.

Any advice greatly appreciated, as I am drawing up her contract tomorrow! TIA x

if ure a f.time nanny, ru suppose to get paid then wen your away and obv wen they r away the family. Not started properly yet i was just wondering, so do you get bank hols day off aswell, wot if they asked you to work those bank hols, do u get paid doubled, or normal?

First and foremost... PLEASE type in English.

It should be in your contract. Do you have one?

You should get bank holidays off (probably but not necessarily paid).

If the family asks you not to come to work, they should pay you anyway.

If you are unavailable for work you should take (paid) holiday or other appropriate leave (i.e. sick leave for SSP or possibly paid -- I pay sick leave but put SSP in the contract for a safety net)

I don't EVER pay double time. Not during "unsociable" hours, not on bank holidays, not for any reason. (although my nanny doesn't work bank holidays)

sorry I get ahead of myself and just go into un-english mode. Iv'e not started with them properly yet, so i haven't got anything at the moment. I was just wondering how it gets worked out with the hols etc.Do you get more hols than you would in a normal 9-5 job. Ill be working 8-6 monday- thursday

Daisy, in Nannying 20 days plus bank holidays is pretty average though some Employers don't give Bank holidays.

You have to sort it out when you sort your contract.

Eleusis · 29/03/2007 11:14

Ah, you actually can expect 4 weeks. And since you are on a four day week it will be sixteen days for you.

If they pay you for bank hols, they can legally count them towards your holiday entitlement. Most people don't, but some do.

don't really know much about it just yet, as i was only temporary for a week, gotta wait till i start permanently. With nanny do u get it bit more easier with holidays or not? I dnt mind going on hols with a week unpaid newayz if i went over. Would this 20 days include xmas then, like in a normal employment

nannynick · 29/03/2007 18:38

Nannying is the same as any other employment. Some employers give better terms than others.

Having worked in the retail sector, I can confirm that it is perfectly normal to not get holiday over the Christmas period - I used to get Christmas Day and Easter Sunday off, as the retail store in which I worked was legally not allowed to trade those day. Everything else was by prior agreement with manager and was taken from holiday entitlement.

As has already been said, as you are working 4 days per week, you would get 16 days holiday per year, at present. Your employer may or may not give you bank holidays off in addition to those 16 days.

I get 20 days and bank holidays and no extra days off. But in other jobs have had more it just depends really. Definately get everything sorted in a contract before you start.

daisy26 · 30/03/2007 11:53

yeh im gonna make sure i get evrything in writing, a contract and what it will include etc. I emailed them today, their previous nanny hasn't told them when she is leaving yet, bit annoying, soon as she has left, I can start. In the meantime Iv'e just gotta sit and wait.

Eleusis · 30/03/2007 11:55

Are you looking for other jobs while you sit and wait? You should. If they can't give you a date I'd say the job isn't exaactly a firm offer.

Im with an agency at the mo, so Im working with them here and there in the weeks.Their nanny has been ill and is just recovering. I only been with them for a week, but I like them and get on with the kids, so i'd rather just wait to be honest. Ill prob go office agencies get temp work as they always have laodsa work
