Hi

Would you believe it........parents of my 2 mindees now away skiing, day 1 of having them and looks like ds has slapped cheek!!!

School sent him away. Do I send 19 month old and 12 week old baby home? Got emergency mobile numbers for grandparent and au pair.

Can't believe it's happened whilst they are away but I don't want to risk these young kiddies getting it (they haven't been with me since Thurs). Would you send them home?

Thanks

i dont know how infectious or concerning this is? find that out then decide on your action..if it is safe enouhg, ring grandparetns anyway just as a courtesy call to say(if it is) all is well just letting you know!..good luck!

why dont u ring nhs direct and ask them for advice ??

Don't worry, they've gone now. I was advised by our local support minder in the end who said best to send home if nursery sent ds home.

Thanks

so is it highly contageous then?

nhs article on it:

we had slapped cheek in school last year - and there were 5 members of staff pregnant - all of whom had to have tests, as it can cause miscarriage.

4 had no complications, the 5th (me) had a mc - it wasn't confirmed that slapped cheek caused it - but there was a possibility ...

it's up to you whether you send them home - but make sure that anybody around them who is pg knows about the possibility ....

Thanks for that article. We've kept ds away from everyone and now his cheeks have cleared which is great Just hope no-one has been put at risk during the time when he looked normal and we didn't know!

if they have, then that's one of those things - nothing at all you can do about it!

Glad ds is better now!

When ds1 had slapped cheek, the doctor made it very clear to me that once the rash has appered, the child is no longer infectious. HTH

Yes slapped cheek is contagious...it is also common. Kids do not get it too badly on the whole, but can feel grotty like flu a day or two. Adults on the other hand are a different story. My son had this last year when I was staying with my Mother who is 70. She ended up catching it and still has it...it must be 6 months later? Its like shingles it can reoccur. so when she is tired or under the weather it reoccurs! So what would I do? Send them home or make sure the parents know what is going on and let them make the choice...
I know they are away though so I think you did the right thing...

Hope they agree with you!

Good luck.
