My new German au pair seems very lonely and I'd love to know if there is anyone around here who has an au pair too (prefereably german) who could be her buddy? Scared she may leave if not

does anyone have tips for helping our au pair to settle in? She's been here 7 days and is looking more miserable each day?

Not helping directly but had a short term idea to perhaps make her feel less homesick.
If you have a Lidl nearby, you could take her with you and ask if there's any particular food she'd like to have. German food is really quite different to ours (well, their meals are different) so perhaps just by being able to eat a few biscuits or cheese or breakfast cereal that's like she has at home, might cheer her up a bit. We lived in Germany and I now regularly make trips to Lidl to buy specific items we can't get here!

great idea - we have one near us.
thanks

You could also ask her if she wants to volunteer in a secondary school for an hour a week as a language assistant or something because she's probably really missing speaking her own language (unless you speak it of course and as long as you could spare her!)

she's wiped out at the mo, probably due to the strain of speaking English all day. Going to bed (or hiding in her room?!) from 8pm.....

Is she going to do english lessons? She'll probably make friends at college if she does.

All of my aupairs have been a bit lonely until language college started and they were able to make friends and get out and about. That's pretty much the whole point of language college in my view! She simply must enrol at one - then you can sit back and watch

I agree, once she starts language school she'll be fine.

She could also post on Nannyjob to see if there are any Au-Pairs nearby.

thanks to all for suggestions. It's been a while because the very next day aupair decided to announce she was returning home. After small melt down and granny arriving (age 80 but super game) for the week to help us we now have lovely nanny from local village and have put the whole foreign episode behind us!!
