WWYD / too old for a nanny?

I've been approached about 2 new jobs. Each are some distance from my home so would mean I wouldn't be getting home until 6.30-7pm, even if I left the office at 5pm sharp. I have one son, who will be 10 in June.

His school run an after-school club, but this finishes at 6pm so would be unsuitable.

Would a part-time nanny from 3.30pm-7pm seem to be our best option?

Also, when is a child too old for a nanny? Would this arrangement be suitable to be continued through my son's early teens?

No experience of a nanny in the past, so all advice gratefully welcomed.

I'd forget the after school club and try and find a childminder who will collect straight from school till you collect. You'd then be sorted for holidats as well

I think it sounds like a job for a part-time nanny. There are nannies that specialise in older children - sort out food, additional classes, supervise/help with homework etc.

I would try a student.
When I was doing my teacher training, I lived with a family for free board and food. Single mum was working long hours, I walked the DD in Y5 to school and made sure the Y8 DS got his bus.
The DD went to after school club, I picked her up on the way home. The DS had made his own way home and I met him there with the DD by 6.30 latest. Mum was usually home by 8pm.

Worked well for the whole school year.
If I'd got a job for my NQT year in the same town I'd have stayed

I think I'd put him in the afterschool club then let him have half an hour/an hour at home on his own. Give him money for a taxi if it's too far to cycle.
Ten is plenty old enough to be on your own at home for half an hour.
