CAN NANNIES EVER BE SELF-EMPLOYED?

I am a childminder, but am thinking about possibly becoming a nanny for one of the families I mind for. Does anyone know if this is possible on a self-employed basis, and would I be able to take another child with me?

Nope. You be their employee.

This gets asked so often, that a nanny agency recently managed to get HMRC to confirm the position in a letter - HMRC's relply
Quote from the letter
"From the Revenue's point of view, nannies working in a family's own home are regarded as employees."

You could take another child with you, your own, or even someone elses - but in the latter case it becomes a NannyShare and both families are then your Employer.

If you want to discuss employment status, for any specific work, then contact the Status Officer at your local tax office.

Thanks for the information. I think I will probably carry on childminding at home.

I thought they could be.

There was some sort of loop hole which meant some did until about 4/5 years ago when it was firmly shut. They mus be employees (as everyone else has said)
