I'm looking to employ my first nanny (scary stuff!). What would people suggest is the average holiday entitlement to offer ?

ok u are legally obliged to offer 4 weeks which can inlcude bank hols and you can choose it all

howeere what is normal is 4 weeks holiday + bank holidays, employers choose 2 weeks, nanny chooses 2 weeks.

also most nanny employers get more than 4 weeks holiday them selves. Most emplyers i know have 4 weeks + bank hols in contract choose half each, but actually give the nanny the same amount of leave as they have, but they keep it out of contract for emergancies.

i also know several nannies who have 4 weeks in contracts (choose half each) + bank hols, + the week between Xmas and new year

Most certainly need to give at least 20 days plus the bank holidays. Our nanny must take the same two weeks off as us in the school summer holidays. The other two weeks is up to her by prior arrangement. She gets quite a lot of 'extra' days when we are away during half terms etc but obviously this is just a bonus 'cos it wasn't her that wanted it.

Holiday Entitlement - Information from DTI, including proposals for increase in entitlement for Oct 2007 and Oct 2008.

If your nanny will work less than 5 days per week, then you can pro-rata the holiday entitlement. It is still however 4 weeks holiday - so if working 3 days per week for example, would get 3 (days) x 4 (weeks) = 12 days holiday.

If you are having a term-time only nanny, it is possible to word the contract such that the nannies holiday is only to be taken during school holidays.

We have the same arrangement as NannyL but with flexibility built in-ours is off back ot Oz at Xmas so will need extra but we were away for 3 wks at Xmas and didn't expect her to take more than 3 days as holiday.

If you find the right nanny, you will be happy to give extra days or be very felxible.

Good luck!
