Is a couple of days too much to ask for?

I am a nanny who only wants to work a couple of days a week. Tomake it worth while they would have to be full days. So why cant i find a job?

joeysmum · 08/02/2007 14:38

I could do with you!!! About to go back to work, only need a nanny for a few days a week but i work shifts (i'm a nurse) so can't do 'fixed' shifts. Where are you based?

charmedhay · 08/02/2007 14:53

Would you consider a childminder ? Can be flexible

Ladymuck · 08/02/2007 15:02

I don't live far from you. My nanny prefers a split week, doing 3 days for one family and 2 for another. It hasn't been a problem for her so far.

For me I think that your main limiting factor is that you don't drive. That rules out a fair few activities unless your employer is well located in terms of local transport. Unfortunately if you consider where you live, most of the familes who could afford nannies are probably towards the south, where a car is more useful.

Perhaps a cm would be more of a possibility?

Ladymuck · 08/02/2007 15:03

Sorry - to clarify - would being a cm be a better option?

allaroundmyhat · 08/02/2007 15:31

I would rather carry on being a nanny. I live in Croydon, South London

Yes, I know. I live fairly close. Have you thought about learning to drive?

kkey21 · 08/02/2007 15:42

I was a nanny for 9 yrs, NNEB qualified and i loved every minute of it, but now i have my own 18mth old i registered to childmind and its just as great!

Joeysmum: Let us know which area you are in as i am sure someone can help you find someone lovely! If you are near me then either as a childminder or a nanny

allaroundmyhat · 09/02/2007 17:50

I would learn to drive - but cant afford to at the mo

Sorry for the late reply - the internet crashed last night! I'm in Dover, Kent. My DS currently goes to a CM once a week, but she will only look after him on a fixed day (totally understandable, given her other mindees etc), so i need an alternative method of child care for once i return to work!

BuffysMum · 09/02/2007 21:22

keep looking and advertising. If i go back to work I have realised that I would probably be better off having a nanny 2 days per week than anything else, esp now nannies can be registered for claiming CTC. Perhaps you need to advertise more speficifically in your area - toddler groups/baby groups etc perhaps you also need to state what your daily rate is - I think people assume it is going to be very very expensive.

bambi06 · 09/02/2007 21:29

try simply chilcare..theyre online to register and you get a fortnightly magazine which is full of mothers looking for help as well as nannies/childminders looking for..i used to use them all the time and they were great plus you can put your own ad and its very cheap!good luck ..but what about a nanny share work..also why dont you advertise on the local netmums site as theyve got a childcare board

nannynick · 09/02/2007 23:10

You may find 3-days easier to find, than 2. I had a 3-day per week job in the past, but found it hard to fill 2 days - so ended up doing 3 days nannying and 2 days temping in nurseries.

What feedback have you had from agencies and parents so far? Is being a non-driver putting people off... I expect it is, thus will make job hunting harder - though tricky to sort until you have income to pay for lessons.
Are there part-time jobs around in your area? Or are you finding that it is all full-time jobs?
If you are finding that there are jobs, but you are not getting interviews - then we need to look at what could be causing that. However if there are not any part-time jobs around, then there is little you can do, except consider full-time positions.
