TRIAL AND RETRIBUTION (excuse spelling)

It was horrid and I know it was not true but what a sad story line.

For those who didnt see it - it was about a nanny going around using false ID and turned out she killed to of her children she was looking after.

Im glad im a childminder as after that i said to my dh - I dont think I could trust someone with my children....how scarey as u dont know what goes on behind closed doors

I didn't watch it but it's only a programme , if all mothers felt like you we would be out of a job.

ssd · 07/02/2007 07:26

I thought it was really awful, played up tp too many stereotypes.

Hope it hasn't managed to put mums off going to work.

mykidzrmyworld · 07/02/2007 09:33

i know its only a programme but things like that do happen
it was just a clear statement anything could happen to our little ones without us knowing so trust is a big factor.
Ive used a CM in the past!

dont forget - the mother of the child who hired the nanny didnt check her out completely, or do any disclosure checks

nailpolish · 07/02/2007 09:41

mykidzmyworld - but when you used a cm you surely used a registered one who had had disclosure checks and references

mykidzrmyworld · 07/02/2007 09:48

thats very true!
didnt think of that bit!
How could a mother not check out the references!

So all nannies are inherently evil with murderous tendancies? Great, another tv program that implies that anyone who wants to look after other people's children is not to be trusted under any circumstances.

Yes, there have been tragic cases of nannies harming the children in their care but tv storylines like these make it seem like this happens all the time.

mykidzrmyworld, please don't think that all child carers are not to be trusted, instinct plays a crucial part in choosing someone to take care of your child, as well as ruthlessly following up references and police/ss checks. I'm assuming that the parents of your mindees trust you completely so you must have passed their 'instinct alarm' along with other checks I'm sure they will have made.

Lovemygirls is right, if all parents could not trust ANYONE with their children there wouldn't be nannies and childminders etc...

mattysmummy · 07/02/2007 10:21

I think what everyone needs to remember is that unfortunately more children are harmed by family, friends etc "people they know and can trust" than professional people like Childminders/Nanny?s/Nurseries/teachers etc. Its just that as the offences by professional people are so few and far between they all get publicised and made into programmes, fictional and non fictional as they draw large audiences. If the programme was about the uncle or aunty or granny then no one would watch it as it would be ?oh one of those again?. Sensible people only need to look at NSPCC and Childline to get a sense of things like this. Im wary of everyone around my son, not overly but certainly to an extent, friend, family or not.

mykidzrmyworld · 07/02/2007 10:21

It just made me think after watching that 'Oh how could I trust someone'
JUST a figure of speech as if I was to go bk to work I would leave my children with someone I trusted.
Even though the programme was about a nanny I think it outlines how much trust we put into any type of carer.
I think having a nanny IMO is easier to keep tracks on as they are in your home i.e if suspicious u could pop home anytime or go to the extremes of camerea's like some people have in some cases but trusting having a CM u dont know what they are doing etc as they are not in your home.
I think we as parents should always trust our instincts as they are usually right.
Some CMers have started using web cams excluively for parent use which is a great idea! But im not technical enough for that!

Oh and Linda Le Plant would be out of a writers job if she wrote about all things bright and beautiful....

nailpolish · 07/02/2007 10:22

i also trust my child to tell me if she is unhappy or afraid

mykidzrmyworld · 07/02/2007 10:23

very true also MM.
It could be too close to home too!
Sad world really!
Being wary is very wise

Very true about 'all things bright and beautiful' not making good telly! I do think program makers should be very careful about scaremongering though, even if it does produce 'mega ratings'. I also agree that programs like this do make you think about they way childcare has changed in our society.

Nannycams are apparantly on the increase in america and will probably become more common over here but I really hope they don't become relied upon in place of parental instinct.

star1976 · 07/02/2007 20:56

Well I was very pleased to hear recently from the parent of a child in the same class as my DD, who is friends with mindee's mum(??!??!?!?!?), that mindee's mum is completely happy with the care I provide and does not worry about her DD at all whilst with me!

Especially as at 11 months (when she started) she had never been without her mum before and mum was very worried initially!

Just thought I would tell this 'story' to prove that although there are SO many scary stories around and we ALL worry, most parents do seem to have some kind of natural instincts over who they can and can't trust, and thankfully we should always have work cause of that!
