Question for all you lovely CM's - what are good questions to ask potential CM's??

Hi All - I was wondering if you could advise the sort of questions I should ask CM's when looking for childcare for my DD??
Also I would of thought CM's cannot be booked very far in advance, is this true?
Have to go out now but will be back later to follow your always useful advice !!!
TIA

I think there is a post someone wrote up before - does anyone have it?

I would ask to see all qualifications, the portfolio to include policies/procedures, insurances, certificates etc.

Um, ask them about their day, where they go and what they would do with your DD - but just watch them together. At the end of the day you want someone who will care about your child, and plays with them.. I would think anyway.

There is more, just overtired so brain on malfunction.

These were posted quite a while back by another CM mumsnetter I think it covers most things Also the question of booking far in advance some CMs dont mind, some will charge a retainer and some will ask you to call closer to the time. It all depends on the CM we are all different

How long have you been working with children?

What training have you had? Any qualifications? Are you part of a network, achieved a quality assurance qualification, look at registration certificate, insurance details, business use for car. First aid must be no more than 3 years old, food hygiene certificate, Certificate in Childminding practice or NVQ 3, Contracts and record forms

Do you enjoy being with children and why?

Can I look around, see the rooms and outside play space? If there is no outside play space - how will you make sure my child gets the chance to play outside?

Where will my child rest?

What kind of food and drink will you give? Can I see a menu?

What will my child do all day?

How do you encourage good behaviour?

Will my child be with a regular group of children? How old are they? How will their timetable fit in with my child?

How will you make sure I know how my child is getting on?

What hours is she open?

How much does she charge?

What about when my child is sick, holidays, days off

What do you do in an emergency?

When was her last Ofsted, can you see the report?

Top 10 Quality Pointers

When you visit possible childcare options, look for these Quality Pointers:

Are the children calm, safe, happy and busy?

Do children play and talk together?

Is the childminder listening to the children and answering them carefully?

Is the childminder friendly and proud of her work?

Is she joining in joining in with what the children are doing?

Are there lots of fun activities planned to help children learn and play? Can children plan some of these activities themselves?

Are there plenty of clean toys and equipment for children to use?

Is the premises clean, well kept and safe for children with a fun outside play area (or will the child go to parks and other places regularly)?

Do parents have plenty of chances to say what they want for their children?

If there are other things you want to know, don't be afraid to ask. Good childminders expect you to ask questions and will be happy to answer them.

Always take up references. You could ask for names of other parents to talk to about the service

I am just about 2 interview a newly registered CM for my 1 year old so can't follow all of these questions - any other ideas. I am a bit nervous about this fact but everyone has to start somewhere.

WanderingTrolley · 10/02/2007 18:58

pmsl shosha - esp "are you mad"

You will learn more about the childminder not from the exact answers she gives, but how she gives them, iyswim.

when you visit you will know straight away if the cm is for you its a gut thing

meb2006 · 10/02/2007 19:56

ok

ThePrisoner · 10/02/2007 20:00

Ask if you could talk to previous and present mindee parents.

estatebabe · 11/02/2007 07:49

meb2006 - i guess if she is a cm sha has kids of her own? Chat to her about her kids and you should be able to get the feel of her. If you do use her - make sure you only sign a short contract (3 mths max) that way if things don't work out you can get out. Sure it will be fine - new cm is probably sooo full of enthusiasm and will do anything and everything OFSTED & NCMA suggest

ayla99 · 11/02/2007 16:05

re newly registered cm - she may have a cv, references from past employer, character references. May have experience in other areas of childcare (nursery, preschool etc). I would ask about what kind of jobs she has had before, why she changed to childminding.

Ask about what equipment/toys/activities she has for your child's age group - she may not have a lot to begin with but likely has plans to expand once she's got some sort of income. Would it help to leave a buggy/car seat (check appropriate fit in cm's car first) etc initially or does she have everything your child needs already?
