child minding - how do I go about getting registered?

Am thinking of registering as a child-minder when I move house in the summer. What sort of things should I be thinking about? What courses do I need to do? How long does it take? Think of me as a complete imbecile, please and give me any advice you can.

Thanks

Hi

Have a look at the childcarelink website . Put your postcode in and the next page should bring details of your local Children's Information Service. Phone that number and they should be able to help. That's what I did anyway.

Good luck

The Childcarelink website is the official site for registered childminders. They are the people that Ofsted send the info to about us.

One thing to consider, is if any actually wants a childminder in the area to which you are moving. CIS will allow you to start the registration procedure, even if the place you live is overly populated with childminders!

You need to think about this a as BUSINESS from the start. Do as much research as you can into everything you may need to know, from government standards you must meet, how much you can realistically charge, and thus will you ever make a profit, what competition there is locally, who your target market is, and lots more.

The good news is that you have started your research all ready, as here is a good place to ask for advice, and you can find out a lot of helpful information by reading through past message topics. A lot of messages on this board regarding childminding, start CM CLUB, but certainly not all messages relating to the topic, so start by reading all CM CLUB messages, then going through others with titles that look interesting.

Where are you moving to? Your geographic location is important, as there are different laws relating to childminding, depending on your location. Also you never know there may be another mumsnetter childminder in your area, who can help advise you about local issues.
