CM Club: How far is a Walk?

Ok, so I was wondering what you all considered to be 'a walk'. How many miles is a walk?

This week it snowed. I didn't take the children on our usual 2 mile walk. Nor did I take the children on our round the lake walk, about 4.5 miles. We built a snowman in the garden instead.

How far is a walk?

For my mindees I consider two miles to be a walk, bearing in mind that both mindees are 2.3 and 2.7 years old and niether of them go in a buggy.

IMHO a walk can be any length, a lot happens on a walk with children,
"its not about the destination more about the journey!!!!!!"

Perhaps a walk is measured best by time not distance?

When we went out to play in the snow - I wrote in the diaries that we played in the snow in the garden and had a snowball fight (is that politically OK?) It's not a walk as such, but is still time outdoors.

If we go for a walk, I don't write down how far we've gone, I just write about what we did on that walk. We may be relatively close to home, but may still be out for an hour collecting leaves, playing in park or counting doggy doo-doos. If we've only time for a short 10 minute stroll, I still think that counts as "a walk"!!

Whatkatydidntdo's description is lovely!

Agreed, a walk is not about the distance, but the journey. The children I care for love playing in the bushes - we found one great one in Virginia Water, where we had a snack inside the bush - it was that big, like a cave!

When a parent says they want their child to do a daily walk (as per Want poncey organic childminder ), what do they really mean? Is any outdoor activity suitable, or does it have to be a walk of a certain mileage?

well as far as I am concerned...anything outdoors really

a snowball fight sounds lovely

I think "exercise in the fresh air" might have put it better

i walk at least 3 miles a day with my mindees whatever the weather!
have done this with all mindees, most didnt appreciate it at first but soon got used to it!

Tan1959 · 28/01/2007 15:59

Same as smeeinit - out in any weather providing no danger presented like a hurricane - my mindees always bring their wellies with them so they can splosh about in the puddles at the park

Our daily walk consists of school run 25 mins there, 25 mins back twice a day plus to the park for about an hour to hour/half, checking out the bark on trees, the moss on walls, how many doggy poo alerts on the way (similar to TP!) - so my mindees get lots of fresh air; no wonder they have an hours sleep after lunch
