What's the best option?

Right then. DS1 and DS2 are currently in a full-time nursery, and DH and I both work fulltime.
DS1 starts school in September, and his school day will be 9am to 3pm. DS2's nursery day can be 8 - 6pm, but there is obviously flexibility,
From September we will need someone to drop DS1 off at school, and pick him (and I guess DS2) up and give them their tea. We would also need someone to look after DS1 during school holidays (of which there seem to be bloody loads!!)
I've never done the 'personal childcare' thing before, and have no experience of what is available. DH thinks we should get an au-pair, but I'm not too comfortable with having someone living in our house. I think in an ideal world I'd love a "mother's help" or something like that - someone who only wants to works a few (broken) hours a day. Or should we just get a nanny to look after DS2, and she could do the school runs too.
Can anyone please share any experiences or tips with a frazzled Fairy?
TIA

I agree with Shosha, aim for consistency of carer - have the same carer who can care for both your sons. This carer will then become a major part of their lives, and you and DH will get to know them well. Childminder of Nanny would therefore be the option, though Childminder may be best in your case given that you have not had care in your own home previously.

Thank you - that's really helpful!
