Jam sandwiches?

Are jam sandwiches an acceptable lunch for a childminder to feed by son? I think not, so will raise it with her, but wasn't sure if I was over reacting!

Fishcake, nothing, if that's what you want to give your child.
But early years professionals have to demonstrate that they are promoting healthy eating in their setting and provide nutritional meals

In true MN style there are really helpful comments, and some massively dramatic ones! Lol! We've talked about his allergies a lot and I've provided a book listing everything's can and can't eat. I'm not overly fussy and kids eat convince foods dometimes (I'm a working mum) but I wouldn't call something that high in sugar lunch. I'm fairly new to childminders so wasn't sure if it was the norm. Otherwise she's fab

I don't see the problem once a week with some fruit cucumber etc

Would ofsted really get on their high horse on that?

Yes I agree children need a healthy diet - but surely what would mean crisps chocolate cake chips etc wouldn't be allowed either

I would ask cm for a meal planner for the week

LouBlue1507 · 27/05/2016 20:47

If you don't like her lunches why don't you provide a lunchbox?

blublutoo · 27/05/2016 20:47

insancerre early year professionals do have to demonstrate that they are promoting healthy eating, yes. But a healthy diet includes sugar too. It's called a balanced diet, which growing children need. I don't think a jam sandwich is really all that bad BUT I probably wouldn't give it as often as once a week (as a childcare professional!) but probably would give more as a parent.

Maryann1975 · 27/05/2016 20:48

I'm a childminder and I wouldn't be giving a child I was being paid to look after a jam sandwich for lunch. I might give my own children a jam sandwich at the weekend, but I pride myself on giving good quality, nutrious food to my mindees and a jam sandwich is neither of these things. It is no harder to put a slice of ham or some cheese in a sandwich.

Maryann1975 · 27/05/2016 20:52

Blublutoo, I'm not convinced children need the sugar from a jam sandwich, I think it would be far better for them to get their sugar from fresh fruit rather than jam. My problem with a jam sandwich is you are taking the protein out of the meal. Children need protein far more than they need extra sugar.
(I'm not trying to make out sugar is the devil, but children consume so much of it, I can't see they need to be given extra for their main course).

Loublue - I was proving his lunches but they asked me not to as they felt he would settle better if he was eating same as the others. I actually agree. I have no problem with their menu, just noticed that he had ham sandwiches for lunch today.

Police Cars??

Ahh, actual Jam sandwiches! Grin

Don't see the problem in them once a week, what about a nice banana sandwich? Mmmmmmmm

LittleNelle · 27/05/2016 22:05

There's no good in a jam/nutella sandwich - kids certainly don't need that amount of sugar!

I do let mine have toast and jam sometimes, but lunch should be a bit more nutritious. I wouldn't mind an occasional jam sandwich but once a week seems a bit much.

VulcanWoman · 27/05/2016 22:09

Makes me laugh that Nutella commercial, ooow it's full of milk and cocoa goodness, er, no, oil and sugar.

The2Ateam · 27/05/2016 22:11

Love banana sandwiches! On brown bread... Mmmm

it's a very cheap way of feeding a toddler. Lazy too. I wouldn't be impressed really

jannier · 28/05/2016 20:29

If your not sure about what she feeds and why the best way forward is a chat, I Have parents with particular wishes but as I'm not a mind reader I'm glad they talk to me.
I don't do jam sandwiches personally as a meal but would if caught out a guess. As others have said maybe she's not sure what to give.

Our school does Jam sandwiches as one of the choices once a week. But they have fruit as pudding instead of something sweet.
