child minder fees

Would someone be able to tell me how much they pay their childminder?

I'm thinking of setting up a small (x3 children) childminding facility from my house in Southfields?

Would anyone also be able to tell me if they think working from 9.15 am-3 pm would attract parents?

I'm a primary school teacher looking for a change, I'd like to run it as a small pre school / organic food / nurturing environment

Any advice welcome, thanks in advance

I think I'm Southfields parents will want longer hours to cover the day's work and commute. Most I know of in that area open 7.30am-6.30/7pm

Loulou2kent · 11/04/2016 18:53

Agree with other poster. Most parents need childcare from 7.30/8am -6/7pm if using a childminder. That's not to say you might find the odd parent that only wants school hours though, just be harder to fill vacancies I imagine.

SweepTheHalls · 11/04/2016 18:55

Those hours would be of no use to me. My CM charges £3.50 per hour per child.

thanks for responses so far
very useful info for me

£31 per day, 7am-6pm.

The hours you state would be useless I'm afraid.

Paulat2112 · 11/04/2016 19:10

I've seen fes across the country range from £2.50 per hour to £7 per hour. I don't think those hours would be of use to most people.

nannynick · 11/04/2016 19:12

In my area £5-6 per hour is typical. The childminder I know is most busy before and after school. That seems to be where there is most demand. It no doubt varies.

missapples · 11/04/2016 19:17

£3.90 an hour. £1.50 for meals

LouTheMac · 11/04/2016 19:18

I pay £4.40 ph in essex but rural location. My DS age 2 does 9am-5pm so he only has to do the school run in the afternoon. I would much rather have the flexibility to drop off earlier at 8-8.30 but it means he is going straight in school run which doesn't seem fair on him.

Not sure if this helps but I know someone who specialised in after school and school holiday care which seemed to work well for her.

Purplehonesty · 11/04/2016 19:25

I charged £4.30 an hour when I was childminding.

And I worked 8.30-5.30 which allows parents to get to work and back plus do the 9-5

Occasionally I did 7.30-4.30

I think people who want the hours you talk about tend to use nurseries for the 'free hours' and not childminders.

Sorry!

BackforGood · 11/04/2016 19:26

I can't see who your market would be there. I mean, you might hit lucky and find the younger sibling of someone working short hours in the middle of the day so they can pick older ones up from school, but I wouldn't think it would be sustainable.

Now if you wanted PT hours, then out of school hours would be the way to go "wrap around" care.

DorotheaHomeAlone · 11/04/2016 19:28

Our south London childminder offers 8-6 with most kids doing 8.30-5.30 for £70 a day. Your hours wouldn't work for us either in attsid

sianihedgehog · 11/04/2016 19:29

I pay £5 an hour in Brighton.

gamerwidow · 11/04/2016 19:30

I pay £5/ hour. I can't imagine who would want school hours only childcare? Childminders tend to offer longer hours than nurseries or after/ before school clubs. My cm is open from 7-7.

alltouchedout · 11/04/2016 19:32

£30 for a full day (available 7:30am- 7pm) or £5 an hour. I'm in South Manchester, I think the full day rate is a very competitive charge. I wouldn't be able to use childcare that started later than 7:30 and finished before 6:30.

StinkyMcgrinky · 11/04/2016 19:39

Our CM (Leeds based) works 7.30am - 6pm and charges £35 for the day which includes all meals and trips out. We supply nappies and wipes.

I'm afraid I have to agree with PPs and say those hours wouldn't work for us. I work 9-4.30 so need to work my DSs drop off and pick up times around that.

lightgreenglass · 11/04/2016 19:48

I pay £55 a day in SE London - 8am to 6pm.

janethegirl2 · 11/04/2016 19:54

I needed child care from 7:15 to 18:30 if I'd chosen it locally, but when I had my dcs in child care near work I needed it 8:15 to 17:00. Guess which I chose to use?

HippyPottyMouth · 11/04/2016 19:58

Our CM works 6.30am to 5.30pm and charges £4.25 per hour. Your hours wouldn't work for us as we need to drop DD off on the way to work and pick her up after work.

insancerre · 11/04/2016 19:59

I run a preschool and we offer funded hours between 9 and 3 but most of our parents use us to prepare their children for school. Part of that is socialising with other children

NickNacks · 11/04/2016 20:00

The majority of cms provide a nurturing environment, many provide organic food and all provide a learning scheme appropriate for the children in their care with activities and outings designed to teach and develop the mindees. Lots are level 3 and above qualified.

Wona · 11/04/2016 20:06

thanks again, all useful info, best wishes to everyone!

I am going to stick my neck out and say that you might well attract someone who is working in a flexible/pt/freelancing type of way and just wants a few hours of care. I used to live in a fairly similar area and did look for a pt childminder or nanny share at one point. I would have been interested in what you describe.

Not everyone commutes or wants their small children in childcare for long days. You only need 3 children and your high level of qualification will go a long way in attracting parents.

The point is, it would be your own business and you can run it in any way you like.

Why not put out a taster advert/poster 'new childminding setting planned for Southfields...', say what your hours would be and invite people to get in touch if they are interested? See what response you get.

TwoWeeksInCyprus · 11/04/2016 20:30

In London, similar type of area to Southfields/Wimbledon
Our childminder's charges are:
£10 from 8am to school drop off
£20 for school pick up to 6pm, including healthy dinner (this is the option we use)
£70 for full day, 8am-6pm

Wona · 11/04/2016 21:01

Thank you for the last two posts, especially MaybeDoctor - I will do just that!
