Moving / nanny advice

we just moved house and our live-out nanny is unhappy. it adds extra 15 minutes to her commute each way (used to be 15 mins walk for her and is now 30 mins walk / 15 mins bus or tube). we've done what we can to sweeten it - paying for transport, increased pay, reduced hours etc. but she says she's only willing to give it a go and then will decide if she wants to leave. i work FT and am worried about being without nanny - she has 6 weeks notice period but what if i can't find someone in 6 weeks. any advice?

we're in nw london.
i agree so i asked her. she said she enjoys working for us, thinks we're a great family, loves DS and feels appreciated. it's just the convenience issue.
she's great with DS, which is most important thing for me. she's not the best at communicating, takes things too personally and has been a bit unreliable. i'm ok with that as long as she's good with kid. prospect of trying to find new nanny fills me with dread.

I agree with NurseyJo-if you have done everything to make she she is not inconvenienced, and it sounds like you have, then I suspect there is more to it.

How long has she been with you?

SickJealousandWorried · 07/01/2007 11:33

"convenience issue"?

If you have reduced her hours so she doesn't have to leave any earlier or get home any later and have covered transport costs,I don't understand the "convenience" issue.

LJAM · 07/01/2007 11:43

she's been with us for almost 1 year. don't understand it either. i think she just gets worried by change. maybe things will settle once she's used to it.
but still v worried in case they don't.

Perhaps she doesn't like public transport? Would it make any difference to her if she got a taxi?

nannyDB · 07/01/2007 13:57

I think you've been more than accommodating towards her. Being a nanny is a job like any other - if she worked in a bank and had her job transferred to another branch 30 mins away, I doubt that pay rises, fewer hours and transport paid for would come into the deal.
You haven't moved that far - I know a lot of nannies who travel further, using public transport early in the morning and late at night.
I think the onus is on her to either buy a bike or move closer if its inconvienient to her or find another job if she can't cope with the commute.

we only just moved so she hasn't yet had time to get used to it.
thanks for the advice everyone.
