Au Pair to Nanny Salary

THGS333 · 21/03/2016 14:51

Hi, our wonderful au pair has said she would like to become our live in nanny from September. We have been paying her £95/week as an au pair.
I have two children - the eldest of which will be starting school in September. Our younger one will be at home all day with our au pair/nanny in September.
Our au pair/nanny will be 19 in September so young and this will be her first live in nanny job.
What is a fair salary?
Thank you all in advance for your help!

Nanny salaries vary by location, experience, qualifications and other factors like the parents ability to pay.

Has their job changed a lot, such as an increase in hours or responsibility?

I would have thought nmw. Her first job. 19 and assume no childcare quals

Did you ask her to be your nanny? Is it as need more then usual ap hours?

Live in though, so NMW would not apply. However that is a salary point you could look at offering.

At 19 years old, NMW is £5.30. If they were doing 40 hours a week then weekly pay of £212.

£212 gross per week
Employee NI £6.84
Income Tax: £0.09
Employers NI £7.73
So cost to employer (if agreeing gross salary) £212+£7.73 = £219.73 per week.
Then payroll admin cost (£180 per year).
Obviously costs will be different if the working hours are different.

I think what nannynick suggested is very reasonable. How much does she earn now? If she earns £100 per week now, that would be twice as much per week for her.

Whatever you start with you can always increase over time. A lot lot harder to decrease a salary.

As an au-pair, what does she do now childcare and housework wise? In September will the job be vastly different? If you are at home a lot now with her, then it is an ideal time to mould her to your way of dealing with things and what you see as being the priorities. You can also let her gradually have more responsibility and be around to see what happens. Some people will settle in nicely to a sole charge position, others will never make it.
