i don't work weekends - never been asked and wouldnt like to but if i did i would say i would be doing normal family things and if thats ok i would have them if not i wouldnt do it.

whatkatydidntdo · 04/01/2007 09:41

unless it is part of an already agreed week I would charge a premium rate for weekends.

S88AHG · 04/01/2007 10:01

I agree, if you are minding at weekends parents should understand that "normal" family things will go on, I dont see it being a problem, but I know what you mean, I have had things where people just expect things and it is annoying, and I usually manage to do everything they ask. There is massive competition for child minders where I live so feel I have to be more "flexible"

I wouldn't take on a regular weekender but would consider odd days eg for shift workers or one-off conference/training/hospital etc.

Its usual here to charge at least time & half or double time for sat & double time for sunday.

You could add to future contracts that you will do up to a fixed maximum number of saturdays eg, 1 each calendar month?

StrawberrySnowflakes · 04/01/2007 12:31

well the parent does work shifts which i knew about but it was specified overnight care not weekends and shes just sent her hours to me as norm?..no, would it be possible to work a week on saturday?(and i always ask for hours a fortnight in advance so i can arrange myself but rarely get it)...yeah have actually just been to post office and aldi for fruit with mindee, she was late geting driopped off so told her mum to leave her coat on as we were going out and told her where!
am feeling like my eyes are finally opening and i 'can' do certain things, things which i or most people would find acceptable(like popping to post offfice) which i thought was unforgivable before...we were thinking of taking dd swimming that sat, so if i decide to ill tell the mum to put a cossy and armbands in plus what it costs.

i only charge £1 extra on saturdays..yeah stoopid i know!, and £1.75 extra on sundays which is just over time and half, but may adjust these fees for any new children as im just learning!

I would def have serious words with regards to her not discussing it and assuming. You need to tell her you might have had plans so she cant take it for granted that you were available. You wanna watch she dont make it a regular accurance

StrawberrySnowflakes · 04/01/2007 16:19

i know what youre saying!, but i did say id be flexible, just with notice, not by assumtion..thinks im gunna copy off Shosha and do a newsletter, so then im not 'pulling them up' about things directly..still having prob with one mindee who has constant dirty(and by dirty i mean black thick muck) under her nails, mention it several times a week, mum says dont know how they get so dirty??, but nothing done.she must be very busy mum thats all i can think and doesnt get enough time to do stuff most of us do automatically?!

I have similar problem, child whose nails, hands, face always dirty when arrives. I always make a point of saying 'I have cut x's nails again today' but it seems to go in one ear and out the other!

news letters are fab i do them for my parents
it informs them of new things plus reminds them of excisting things

i dont do news letters each month/term i just do them when i think i subject needs to be aired

i'm off this week so already with my week off i have printed off my hols list till next Jan
also included newsletter wishing everybody happy new year, fees going up in April, thanking parents for prezzis

feels good to be organised
