Hi there

Im seriously considering childminding and wondered if any of you could talk me thorugh the process and how long it can take.

I have 2 children and work with kids but would love to work at home.

Thanks

Ok, no problem there... but to start with a few questions if you don't mind.

Where do you live? - There are different rules and procedures depending on where you live.

How old are your own children?

Do you live in a house, flat, other?
Is it rented?

mummy77 · 29/12/2006 16:33

HI

I live in the North east.

My kids are 8 and 12 and we live in a house but it is rented - does that affect anything?

Thanks

renting is fine.
your kids wont count in the numbers for cm so that is good!
Im from Wales so the process is totally different so wont go into wat happen for me.
Good luck, all i can say is once registered it can take quite a while to build up your business depending on local demand so you could not earn much for some time?Is that possible for you? Maybe you would have to get p/t job along side to start with!

There is no issue with renting, though you will need to get permission from your landlord.

As you are in England, you will need to register with Ofsted. To do that, contact your local Children's Information Service. You can find their contact details using ChildcareLink .

Ask them about Registering as a Childminder, they will be able to give you further information, a registration pack and details about a training course.

As both your children are over 8, it will not affect the number of children under 8 for whom you can care. The maximum allowed is 6 under 8's, though it does depend on house size.

You need to complete the Registration form and send it to Ofsted. There is also a form for anyone over the age of 16, plus a health form. Note: Your doctor may charge you for completing the health form, they can sometimes charge quite a high amount.

Paperwork can take 3 months, sometimes more, sometimes less. Ofsted will send an inspector out to your home to check it's suitability.

Get yourself a copy of the
Guide to Registration for Childminders
Childminding Standards
Guidance to the National Standards
Revisions to the Guidance

Hope that helps.

middlesbrough!..contact c.i.s, dont know stockton number but mbro (354200) will pass it to you.
Now we lived in Ingleby barwick last year and because of this i was unable to get any kind of help financially with training or equiptment, but other areas in stockton should be able too.
Back In mbro i got 12 wk ICP training paid for inc first aid and business planning, then because of my postcode and that im close to surestart areas i also got ncma membership and ncma ins free(official paperwork contracts etc and safety equiptment)
good tip, contact walker hall associates - andy(mbro), he helped me get lots of help, advice and more importantly funding to help me set up!
vista print do free(only p&p to pay) business cards/leaflets etc, but thats a bit ahead!
anyway, contact cis mbro first, they will point to right people then take it from there.good luck

Hi

I rang the childcare place today and the lady took my details and is getting someone to ring me to chat to me but they never rang back today

Im quite excited about it.

Do you really enjoy your job?

nannynick · 29/12/2006 21:31

Expect your timing wasn't good. They probably aren't working much again till after the New Year. Certainly when I worked for the government, we had far less staff in over the Xmas period... so expect council is much the same.

Follow up with them in the new year.

StrawberrySnowflakes · 30/12/2006 19:17

yeah i would ring them next week, the person you need to speak to is more likely to be working.
Yes, i wouldnt welcome any other job now, i have been working(unpaid from aug till Nov) since november and as im still learning ive found my problem is i try to do too much, i try and resolve everybodys issues and have to 'bring the child up', when what i was already doing(caring for them, making them safe, happy, entertained whilst in my care) is more than enough!
I am hoping to get more children on before and after school in the new year as i think although my few months with full timers has been wonderful, the variety of more children will be lots of fun and keep me on my toes (already lost a stone since doing this!)
Feel free to ask any questions, although there are other cm's on here much wiser than i, but seeing as im local, you can even pop over to see what my set up is like!..good luck with c.i.s

mummy77 · 30/12/2006 21:38

I owuld love to pop over to see you if thats ok.

Would be a great chance to ask questions(if you didnt mind)
And see your set up.

Thanks
Kelly

mummy77, where abouts are you? - I'm having my first in a few months and so might be on the lookout for a good childminder (I know - I like to plan in advance!!). I'm just outside Durham.

mummy77 · 31/12/2006 16:37

Thanks
