Hi. I'm new to Mumsnet, so I hope I'm doing this properly! I've got 2 lovely girls (3 yrs & 10 months) and we're looking for a qualified nanny, non smoker, who also likes cats, to work Mon, Tues & Weds from Feb onwards. 8.30am to 6.15pm. We live just outside Esher, beside the duck pond. 3 year old at playgroup in morning, just across the Common. Please do contact me if you know of anyone, or have any advice, or if you yourself are interested. Many thanks. Laura

Hi Laura, welcome to Mumsnet.

I am a nanny in Bagshot, Surrey for 3 soon to be 4 children.

While this board is read by a few nannies, you may find it worthwhile posting over at the Nanny Shares board as well. While it is mostly nanny shares, you will also find adverts from Childminders and Nannies, so it has become more of a general childcare job board in my view.
Mumsnet: Nanny Shares board

Have you ever had a nanny before?

Will you be wanting a nanny who is Approved, so that you can pay them using Childcare Vouchers / Working Tax Credit?

Welcome to Mumsnet... we are a generally very friendly bunch, especially here on this board. Any queries you may have about any kind of childcare, please do not hesitate to post a question.

Good luck in your quest to find a nanny.

Nick - aka NannyNick, one of very few male nannies in Surrey, UK.

NannyNick - thanks so much for your reply. I'll post also on the Nanny Shares board as well, thanks for the tip. Yes I am hoping to use the childcare vouchers, and I've not employed a nanny before so any other advice that's out there is so much appreciated!
With thanks.

With regard to Childcare Vouchers, it can take a while for a nanny to be approved. Therefore, state in any advertising that you require someone who is already approved, or if you can afford to pay nanny without using vouchers for a few months, then say you will accept someone willing to go through the approval process - however, check if they have worked/lived abroad at all in past 5 years, because if they have this can delay the checking process.

You will find lots of helpful information about interviewing nannies on this board. There are also details regarding how to register as an employer and operate PAYE. Being an employer of one person isn't that tricky, once you have got your mind around it.

Only tricky thing I can see with your situation is what the nanny will do on Thursday and Friday. Perhaps they will already have other work on those days, or not need to work at all. Whatever the case, agree a GROSS salary, then if they do have other work it won't affect your PAYE too much.

Ask Playgroup if you can put an ad up on a parents notice board, plus of course ask the staff if they know of anyone looking for 3-days per week work.

Would you consider a Registered Childminder? Unlike a nanny, a you take your children to a childminder, whereas a nanny cares for your children in their own home. You can use Childcare Vouchers with Registered Childminders (ask individual childminder regarding this).

This really is so helpful, thanks so much for this help. I was feeling so daunted by it all!
At the moment I think it would be ideal to have a nanny rather than childminder, mainly to have the benefits of someone being at our home; but I will look into all the options.

Spotted your ad over at nannyjob - hope you get some responses. When it comes to doing a contract, make sure the figure agreed is Gross, as you can not be certain that you will be able to use all of the nannies tax free allowance.

guildford.gumtree.com is also somewhere else to try (currently free for guildford area ads). Nannyselect.co.uk is another place, got my current job via that site - now in my second year with the family.

LauraDenham · 29/12/2006 20:16

I'll put ads on both of those sites, thanks very much, as I've only had one response so far to the nannyjob ad. Noted re the gross figure on the contract ... thanks so much for this.

if your potential new nanny wants employment for Thurs and Fridays you could try looking on www.sharingcare.co.uk or www.thenannysharers.co.uk to see if they have anyone listed who is local to you and looking for a 2 day nanny.
