Ive just had my 4th and last baby 8 weeks ago and will not be having any more. I love babies and all there is to do with them and wondered if any could tell me how I would become a Doula and what qualifications etc I would need please? Thanks

You need www.doula.org.uk

Good for you, btw, great profession IMO (had a doula for second baby).

kittyschristmascrackers · 18/12/2006 22:05

yeah, good for you. I'm having a doula for the 4th time and without them I would not have managed 3, hopefully 4 vbacs after 2 sections. Every woman should have one.

have a look at

nurturing birth

just done my training with them.....do courses all over the country.....fantastic!

also

doula uk there are 5 training courses that are recognised by doula uk ,you can find out more about them on here....

if you want to have a look at my website, i can do a link....

marsladay and hertsnessex are both doulas too and have had a fair bit of work..

Wow thanks ladies. Will look at the links when I get the chance. Had in my mind to become a midwife too but that seems too medical for me. This will the closest I can get to more babies without actualy having more. Which I would love but dont think we have the resources.

Why is this thread in childcare? You might get a better response in "childbirth".

Gingeme · 19/12/2006 09:58

I have read through the htreads and it all sounds just my cup of tea. May be a while before I can consider a training course as I said I have an 8 week old baby to look after first but would love to give it a try in the near future. I have written the web site addresses and phone numbers down for future reference. Thanks

lulumama do you have to know how to drive? Do you have kids too? How does it fit in with them if you have? I would love to do this. Ive seen programmes on the tele and have often thought I could do that....

well, i think being able to drive would be important..unless you have someone who can take you to the clients house/ hospital at short notice...also a lot of what happens, is done antenatally...and you would have at least 2 visits with the family .....you might get called to a birth at 2 am, and you will then have to think about getting a taxi, and then how to get home from wherever you are etx..

i;m sure it wouldn;t be impossible though!

i have a 7 yr old and 16 month old..i have a list of friends, family, nursery nurses, emergency baby sitting agencies and a nursery that will take DD at short notice..and will have to play things by ear a lot. DH works long and unsocail hours, so i cannot rely on him.!

am waiting to hear back from DOula uk, i applied a couple of weeks ago, not had RL experience yet.....so will all be a bit up in the air to start

enjoy your baby first!

Gingeme · 19/12/2006 19:11

Thanks lulumama. I thinkit would give me the push to learn to drive though. I keep putting it off. My dh keeps saying'just think if you could drive you could just jump in the car and go......'. Yeah he's right but its so scary to sit in the passenger seat these days let alone actual driving! Ill keep it in mind. Good luck with your training I hope it all works out well for you.

I don't drive and I think it depends on the public transport situation where you live.

I take taxis and it's paid for by the client. The downside to having your own car is that you drive to the client's house. You go in the client's car to hospital. You have to get back to client's house (at whatever time) to collect your car to go home.

Public transport is a great way to catch up on all the reading you will start to do as a doula.

If you need/want another sounding board you can email me on lovelymarslady at aol dot com

lulumama · 19/12/2006 19:32

there you go !!! two sides to the same coin!

public transport where we are is not so good !! and i have been driving too long to go back to the bus !

mars is great to talk to about doulaing..and hs been a constant support and a big help to me...you won't meet a lovelier doula !

Gingeme · 19/12/2006 19:56

Lovely lovely. I have a free pass on public transport too as dh drives trains for a living. Ok Ill give it some serious thinking and maybe give you an email soon Marslady. Got to put lo to bed now. Thanks again ladies xx
