How long does homemade playdough last for? Sorry if it's a silly question!!

Also, can it be dried in anyway to keep what they've made?

My recipe keeps for months in an airtight container in fridge

i've never used it but you may be able to cover it in pva glue to harden it

I tend to find it's fine for a couple of weeks, if kept in tied bag in a fridge. Air-tight box may well last even longer.

When it is left out, it does dry out and hardens. However, I find that it cracks easily, so is not ideal. If making things to keep, would be better to use salt dough, which is very similar recipe, though no cream of tartar.

Playdough:
1 cup plain flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup water
Some sort of colouring

Cook all in saucepan over medium heat.

Salt dough:
2 cups of plain flour
1 cup salt
1/2 cup water at room temperature

Mix together, then wrap in cling film and put in fridge for at least 30 mins. Can be air dried, or baked in low oven.

My playdough is currently at least a year old and it's just kept in an old ice cream box in a wardrobe - not used every day or by multiple children - you would want to change it more than that for hygenine reasons. No reason not to make a massive amount and then keep pulling some out at a time though.

I don't even know how old my current batch of playdough is! My home-made stuff lasts for months and months, and is kept in the fridge in a sealed, plastic bag. We usually have what the children call "hot playdough" - I add some smelly oil and warm it all up in the microwave (and obviously ensure that it's not too hot).

nannynick...ahh..so thats why my first attempt at salt dough was stuck to every vegatable anuimal and mineral and the second bath was like flaky pasry(too much flour)..didnt know you had to leave it in fridge first
