Hi all, I'm new here. Have applied to become a childminder, done the short course and first aid and have just found out I have my registration visit in 1 week. Any tips would be gratefully received, also do I need to have written all my policies and do i have to child proof the house or can i just show what I will do???

I'm a newly registered CM and had my inspection not so long ago. She went through my CRB check, so make sure you have photo ID of you and all over 16 in the house, plus bills to show you live there. She went through all the national standards one by one to make sure i met them and then looked round the house. You will need to child proof the house and have it as you will be using it when minding. It's also useful to have your portfolio with all your policies for her to look through.

But don't worry, it was no nearly as daunting as I thought it would be! It took about 2 hours but only seemed about 10 minutes!

Good luck!

I don't think that you really have to have everything in place so long as you are aware of things that you may need to do. For instance, be aware that you may need to put up a stairgate, you don't necessarily have to have one already up.

Make lists!

For instance, make a start of putting together some policies, but don't panic about having every one written out perfectly. Be aware of those policies which Ofsted will expect you to have (child protection issues, for instance).

Be aware of equipment that you might need to get (depending on the age of your first mindee) - car seats, double buggy, high chair etc.

Thanks for the comments, I feel a bit more relaxed about it now. I am writing up my policies and getting the house as ready as I can! One question though, for the rooms that will be out of bounds, do I need to get high locks put on them now or can I just say I will have this done before I take on any children? Thanks

You don't have to have the locks on now, and I don't think you'll need locks on at all. But if you are going to, just let her know when she comes round
