Insuring au pair on car - help!

I am trying to add our Spanish au pair on our car as a named driver - but am struggling to get someone to do it as they want a year's driving experience in the UK. Has anyone found a good insurer that won't cost the earth? She is 23. Thank you!

Unfortunately I have never found it at a reasonable price (I'm in Ireland). I recruit au pairs who are at least 25, or about to turn 25 within a couple of months, for this very reason. One of the family cars is open drive, so anyone over 25 with an EU driving license is able to drive it.

Crap I hadn't realised that at all in my recruitment process. Who do you use?!

For the open-drive car, I use Axa, our au pair is named on it as he was here when I was renewing, but if we change au pair then the new one can use the car unnamed because of the open-drive bit. Aviva also do open drive. But all open drive policies that I have ever seen insist on drivers being at least 25.

I use Aviva and have had au pairs insured under 25. But and this is a massive but, I have a Suzuki Alto ( tiny car, tiny engine) that the au pairs use with both myself and the au pair as a named driver. I still end up paying £700 a year for a 23/24 year old with a clean licence.

The age makes a huge difference. Insurance is generally more expensive in Ireland than the UK, but I am insuring a large-engined car for under €500 because my au pair is older. It would be more in the region of €1000 if he was under 25.

I only specify over 22 with 4 years driving experience.

Our youngest au pair has been 23 and with Admiral on our golf it was an extra £300.

We have used Admiral to insure with au pairs.

Admiral here as well. 23 year old au pair with four years driving experience. Added about £400 to our annual insurance.

Sadly, there is also a £600 excess for younger drivers on their standard policy as well, as I have just discovered after she crashed it last week.

Thanks all - I've also gone with admiral. Added £130 to our policy so not bad - considering other quote varied between £300 and £1,000 more!!
