Help with employer's liability insurance

Hello, we're about to employ a nanny to start next month and I read that we're required by law to have employer's liability insurance in place. We live in a rental property, which would be the nanny's place of work, which is probably insured by our landlord but we do not have any kind of insurance on the property in our name.

I've tried phoning up several insurance brokers, and almost everybody I've spoken to insists that it cannot be purchased separately but only as part of home insurance. Obviously, I'd rather not take out home insurance on an already insured rental property so I'm wondering if anybody has experience of being in this situation. If so, any recommendations for brokers to use?

Many thanks in advance.

Do you not have contents insurance? Most of these policies should give you the cover you need.??If your contents insurance doesn't cover you try talking to a broker.

Morton Michel and Enable Insurance Services sell it separately. It is around £100 a year for a single domestic employee. So it is not that cheap.

Many home insurers will include it with Contents Only policies, have you asked around for one of those? Some of the offers companies give for that may mean your contents policy is under £100 a year and will cover you for more than just employers liability, such as your personal possessions. It may be that you end up with two insurance policies covering your possessions (as your landlords policy might cover to some extent) but it may be cheaper than getting Employers Liability on it's own.

As the victim of a flat fire in a rented property when I was single with few possessions I would urge you to get contents insurance anyway. I literally lost everything. And you'd be amazed at just how much it costs to replace even all your personal basics - clothes, underwear, duvets, pillows, bedding, towels, hair dryer, alarm clock...never mind kitchen things like kettles, pans etc. Before you even start on furniture etc (which in my case belonged to the landlord).
And if all you own is what you are stood up in - nightwear maybe (or in my case I was wearing a hired ball gown so one pair of knickers, tights, high heeled shoes and a clutch bag - a friend loaned me some badly fitting clothes to go to the shops) you need some ready cash to do it asap...and will not really have to time to bargain hunt as you try to find somewhere else to live, deposits etc...
My flatmates had contents insurance - I didn't. I was lucky that my employer very kindly gave me some money as a gift and my colleagues had a collection for me...but ever since I've had my own contents insurance.

Thanks a lot for everybody's help.
I actually don't have contents insurance at the moment, but I will look into it now. If it's not much more expensive, might go for it instead.

I am amazed that people don't have contents insurance

I own my own property so have building and contents and literally renewed and was £159 for both. So just contents will be cheaper

Even if £100 that's less then £10 a Month

Sorry to hear about fire /losing all belongings - to me that is one of the worst things that could happen and could have been prevented iyswim

I pay £6 a month for contents insurance for a small flat. Buildings insurance is done in bulk for the block so is in the annual maintenance charge.

I think renting may be a different situation as the landlord does have insurance cover for some things, though I expect is mostly to protect Their things, though may cover some of the tenants possessions.
