I will admit up front i have problem with boundaries, so tend to be very dogmatic about what is suitable to ask our previous live out nannies to do.

Well the new part nanny is living in, so eating all meals with us etc.

Is it ok to ask her to go to the supermarket not in paid hours?

No. Her time outside her working hours is her own time. The fact she eats with you is irrelevant. If you want her to do the shopping, she should do it in work hours.

she had to go food shopping before she moved in, why not now?

What is the agreement for meals? Are you to provide all her meals through the week?

DontFearTheSweeper · 09/09/2015 14:09

Any food shopping she does in her own time is for herself. She lives in your house because she works for you; if you want her to buy food it needs to be part of her working day.

Thatoneoverthere · 09/09/2015 14:10

Why would you need to ask her to get food outside of her working hours? Food/ meals is part of her pay package, you are paying her less because you are providing food.
When I lived in I never ate all my meals with the family and if they had ask me to do the food shopping out of my working hours unless there was a very good reason or they needed a favor I wouldn't have been impressed.

I am providing all her meals

I was expecting her to be a full part of the household, just like she would be in a house share.
But apparently I was wrong, oh well.

Can you provide more details eg what did you want her to go for the shop for, and is the shop a 2 minute walk or a drive away?

0x530x610x750x630x79 · 09/09/2015 14:26

the shop is 6 miles away, and just an interim food shop, not enough for an online shop but we are running ahort of yogurt, veg, salad etc.
Obv. I would be paying.

I haven't asked her anything as i wanted to check if I was out of order first.

But she's not your flatmate. She's your employee.

confusedalways · 09/09/2015 14:29

I think you could ask her but couldn't get annoyed if she said no. Depends on her working hours really I suppose and what her plans are for her time off.

maybebabybee · 09/09/2015 14:35

YWBVU to ask her to shop for your family outside of paid hours, yes. Why would this even be necessary?

0x530x610x750x630x79 · 09/09/2015 14:38

no i was considering asking her to shop for the household to shop for food she eats as much as I do.

You can't treat her like it's a house share. She is your employee from X til Y. Any time out of those hours is her own. Food and accommodation is part of the package of being a live in nanny. If you're running low on food then ask her to do a top up shop with the kids.

Hmm
RachelZoe · 09/09/2015 14:49

Get her to shop online while the kids are doing something else, that's what mine does. He might take the kids to the shops while he's out and about with them as well if we need to grab things. When they were little he did it while they were watching tv or something, now they're at school he does it in the day. You can order anything online, there aren't minimum orders Confused

They look after your children, they're part of your family really, your house is their home.

You can't ask them to do stuff outside of their hours. It's really not on.

maybebabybee · 09/09/2015 14:54

no sorry you are still BU. as others have said it's not a houseshare, she's your employee. Buying for 'for the household' is still work, whether she eats it or not.

Artandco · 09/09/2015 14:55

No you cant. If you don't have time then surely just ask her to go with the children during the day whilst your paying her

Would you do stuff for work outside or work hours regularly for no extra pay

As others said she isn't a flatmate, part of the deal with live in nannies is you provide all food.

wizzywig · 09/09/2015 17:42

Just so's i know, a live in nanny should never need to shop for herself. Any food shopping should be in working hours and for the kids food not adult food?

Thatoneoverthere · 09/09/2015 17:45

Its more a big family/work related shop shouldn't be expected to be done out side of work hours. Doing shopping for adults isn't the issue I've always done it with my positions and even cooking dinner for the parents is part of my current job. Its doing work outside of work hours.

Ebb · 09/09/2015 17:57

A lot of Nannies are happy to do the family shop, take delivery of an on line shop or do top up shops - if mutually agreed and within work hours. Some Nannies don't consider it part of their 'nanny duties' but most would grab bits for the children.
