Promoting British Values in Childminder Setting

I know this is the big new thing in schools, but as a child minder looking after two young children (aged 1 and 1.5, and a three year old one day a week) I am at a loss as to what I have to practically do to promote British values. What is happening in your setting? Parents, have you heard anything from child-minder/nurseries about this? Thanks!

We send the queen a birthday card and mark St George's day. Does that count? We have talked briefly about war (mostly when discouraging them from shooting each other) and go to a Church of England church once a week (they are all Christians).

It's a fine line, because we are supposed to promote British values and we are also supposed to prove that we have a multi cultural provision.

Therefore we also mark major events for other faiths and countries and don't take sides when discussing wars.

If you look at what is regarded by the powers that be as British Values you will find you probably do much if not all of it anyway.

The best document is here but if you are including the views of the children in deciding what activities you do, if you have rules that everyone is expected to follow and you support individual expression and tolerance then you are already there - you just might need to put in a quick policy saying you do this.

Thanks odd boots. Really helpful.

chrome100 · 13/08/2015 10:38

I have never heard about this before but what a load of shit! I am British but don't give a fuck about the queen or St George. What on earth are "British values"? It sounds a bit sinister to me.

HSMMaCM · 13/08/2015 12:45

Chrome. Odd boots link is better than my waffle Grin

Tea party!

Otherwise mainly historical, visiting old castles, who lived there, why. Things we celebrate throughout the year like guy Fawkes, Christmas traditions,

DeandraReynolds · 13/08/2015 13:02

Tea parties aren't a British Value Grin Neither is visiting castles or writing to the Queen. It's values rather than history/traditions/celebrations - respect, tolerance, democracy etc.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 13/08/2015 13:16

exactly, Deandra!

It's 99% likely to be stuff you are already doing, you just haven't written it down. Do you encourage children to share toys and take turns playing with things? If they said something racist would you gently pull them up on it? Do you teach them that everyone's different and that's OK? If so, you are "promoting British values" Smile

A couple of the 4 year olds were playing happily with the play kitchen when one of them proudly announced "Look Auntie Tanith! We made a bomb!!" Shock

I nearly dropped what I was doing. Thank God Ofsted weren't anywhere in hearing! Mind you, it was made with plastic strawberries and torn up paper, so it couldn't have done any damage Grin

I'm pretty sure they have no idea what a bomb really is, though!

HSMMaCM · 14/08/2015 18:07

Was it a strawberry bath bomb Tanith?

Take them on an EDL demo?

insancerre · 15/08/2015 07:09

Its what you are doing already in delivering the eyfs
Its about equality, democracy, making choices, inclusion, and having a voice
Its nothing to do with the queen, London buses or roast beef dinners
Concentrate on the values aspect not the British part

mimishimmi · 18/08/2015 02:05

Well Tanith, the British arms industry is a huge part of the British values of some .... perhaps you could explained that to Ofsted as part of your indoctrination requirements Wink

Koalafications · 18/08/2015 02:43

Take them on an EDL demo?

Hmm How do the EDL support British values?

HSMMaCM · 19/08/2015 08:07

Ok. Official Ofsted view from yesterday's inspection - my house rules reflect British values (all about sharing, being kind, etc).

OddBoots · 19/08/2015 09:10

That is great news HSMMaCM :) I hope the rest of the inspection went well too.

HSMMaCM · 19/08/2015 13:30

Still to be confirmed, but it went rather well thanks odd boots.
