Does anyone know who much a nanny can earn before the employer has to pay tax?

For 2006/2007 tax year.
If you pay your employee £84 per week (GROSS) or more, you need to complete a P11. There are also other circumstances in which you will need to complete a P11, such as if your employee gives you a P45 dated within the current tax year.
HMRC P49 can be a helpful read.
Once you pay your employee £97.01 or more, you as the employer need to pay Employers NICs.
If your employee earns less than £84 a week and your emplyee has another job, then I think you still need to complete the P11.
You are best to ask the New Employers Helpline as they can advise you on your specific situation.

good point about another job - if they already have a job and you just want a few hours/one day a week - you end up getting a bit screwed - the first employer will use up all the tax free allowance - meaning you have to pay tax on everything.
