I have someone coming tomorrow that would possibly like me to look after her 6 year old boy after school only.

I am newly registered but I had thought he could do free time after school along with a snack, and then homework maybe if he had any and then outdoor time until mum came home at 5pm? I only thought as he's had learning all day he really just needs to chill out and play?

Am I right in thinking this?

Thanks
Carrie

very much depends on the child and what the parent wants. I'd ask them and tell them what you could offer.

My after school lot tend to like to veg out when they get back. The in thing at the minute seems to be playdoh as got lots of bits for it (and make a hige batch up so always got loads as well!)

You need to just see how they are, and what the parents think.

as long as you have an activity to hand, it doesnt really mateer if it doiesnt get used..ask the parent what they do with him after school..and go from there!

i only have after schoolers. i always have some toys etc set out for them so they can choose if they want to play with something. they dont really have the tv on. they usually end up playing together, something like 'restaurants' with the play food. alot of the time i kind of just supervise and they just enjoy getting on with it. we'll also sit and do any homework if they want to. we have a snack time at around 4pm where they will all sit down with a drink and a snack.

I certainly don't do obvious "educational"-type activities. We have a snack/drink, and the children can have a choice of different activities - games, jigsaws, construction sets, each other! My older mindees are currently into playdough as well, but also like playing with the younger children.

In nicer weather, we also go to the park or for a walk.

The parents I mind for prefer the children to be able to chill-out.

Good luck for tomorrow!
