Babysitting in Herts

Dear All,

I've had a look at the search topics but can't find anything up to date in the rough area required.

Just wondering what others pay for a babysitter in Herts or surrounding areas?

Looking for someone to do occasional evening babysits once or twice a month for two boys aged 6 and 12. The 6 year old would need putting to bed at 730 (if we were leaving at say 7) and the 12 year old would need prodding to remind him to stop reading/switch off his light at 830. Both will have been fed/bathed etc. Once the small one is in bed, it's pretty much just a case of being there in an emergency, the 12 year old is pretty self sufficient.

Started looking this week, and have been quoted 10ph by an ex nanny we know of. She is a nice girl, only about 20, has a years nannying experience. That is her nannying rate. I was a little surprised as when I was a nanny I didn't charge as much for babysitting as nannying during the day as obviously it's a lot easier! Posted an ad on gumtree and heard back from a 31 year old woman who by day works in finance but does the odd bit of sitting for friends, and she wants 9ph... am I being a tight arse? To me that seems high as she is not a professional, no CRB, first aid etc...

Any thoughts?

Thanks

I'm in Bucks and I'm a nanny (have just over 18 months of nannying experience and 5 years of babysitting experience- I'm 20 by the way). For evening babysitting, I charge £7 per hour before midnight, and £9 per hour after midnight). I get £11 per hour for my nanny job and as you've said, babysitting is much easier so I don't see the need to charge as much!
We're in an expensive area of the country and childcare is generally a bit more than other areas but I think the prices you have been quoted could be a few £s cheaper, especially if they haven't got years of experience or unqualified!
Hope you can find someone :)

hi im in bedfordshire. i use the Sitters agency and pay £6.75 an hour for a qualified childcarer

Thanks to both of you.

Had another reply to the ad.. another non nanny, not a professional etc, just odd babysitting jobs for a neighbour, wanting 10ph... Hmm

Would be more than happy to pay that to the nanny we know during the day as I knew her via a baby group and she was great with the children in her care... but babysitting sleeping older children is not the same as crawling on the church hall floor with a 12m old!! Grin

Think I will look into sitters.

Thanks

We use our crèche staff (we are in Hitchin) and they charge £30 quid an evening. It seems cheap to me so I throw in pizza and a pudding and a tenner tip if we are back late.

I'm a qualified nanny in Herts and charge £10 per hour for evening babysitting. My daughter is almost 17 and she charges £6 per hour for babysitting.

The difference in cost is my level of experience (over 20 years) compared to hers (about a year)

I am in Herts and am CRB checked and have full First Aid and 22 years experience I would charge a min of £60 from 7 to midnight and then £15ph after midnight.
