Got the idea from a thread posted over in chat.

For those nannies who've been working for a good while, what were your working hours? What was the role in comparison to what you expected? Just a bit of fun.

I'll start.
26yrs ago.
Mothers help.
Live-in.
2yr old.
16-17hrs a day.
5 1/2days a wk.
At least two nights a wk babysitting, must stay awake until the parents come home which will often be 2-230am. Then be ready to go again at 730am.
All nursery duties. Including cleaning the whole house from top to bottom every day and washing/ironing for the household.
When having dinner parties, mothers help is required to wait up and clean up after everyone once they have left, this will be midnight at the earliest.
In return mothers help will receive £45 per wk.

Clearly the job wasn't advertised as above, but, that was the reality. I think I've paid my dues, and I now work as a full time nanny. Can't believe people were able to get away with that. TBH the neighbours Au Pair had it a lot worse than me.

My first nanny job was brilliant. 7 years ago, caring for 3 children.

I worked 10 hours a day, 5 days a week and babysat immediately after work 1-2 nights a week. Paid extra for this. I was a live out. I also did the occasional overnight and weekend. I left as the youngest started school. I'm still in touch with the family. Sorry to disappoint but no scandal.

My first nanny post was a temp 10 week post in monaco with an American family who hoilday there every year. 6 month old, working 24/6 staying in adjoining room to them in the hotel with baby in my room

Actually was baby in their room and just brought into me in the morning when she woke, then spent the day going wherever they were going for lunch etc and babysat the 6 nights but that meant putting baby to bed just after they went out, getting room service for dinner and then bed whenever I wanted leaving connecting door open which they closed when they returned back. Pay £500 a week.

Loved it and it got me my first long term post in this country with a family with tiny baby where I stayed till she went to school.

1st nanny job 1985 - 2yo and 4 yo, live out 8-6 5days a week for £45.

2nd nanny job 1987 - 6 month old. Supposed to be 7-7, live-in Monday to Friday for £55. In reality hours were much longer as I was expected to eat my evening meal with them every night to tell them about their baby's day, get up in the night if baby woke as mb needed her sleep for work the next day and start as early as 6am when baby woke as mb was getting ready for work.

First Nanny job was 5 years and 7 months ago. Prior had been a nursery nurse for 4 years.
The job was in Bermuda as a professional Nanny for a busy professional wife/stay at home mum.
Two girls, one their biological daughter aged 6 and number two their 1 year old daughter adopted from Kazakhstan.

Pay- 500 bermudian dollars a week, hours mon-Friday 8-6. As it was my first nanny job and first job in a new country I wasnt aware of the usual babysitting/travel rules or etiquette so I babysat a lot of extra hours and worked a lot of extra hours when travelling with no extra pay!! My goodness looking back I would never agree to that now but hey it was a fabulous job in a fabulous location with a wonderful and generous American family. I did children's laundry, cooking, school runs, Running children to activities and classes, it was a lot of fun. We spent summers in the USA and I got to do a lot of independent travelling.

I wouldn't change a thing about that job it was an experience and for a first time nanny it was the best experience ever!

South coast.
10 month old.
12 hour shifts, 3 days a week one week, 4 the next week, half 7am-7pm, other half 7pm-7am. Baby slept 7-7 so I did nothing.
No nursery duties, mum did it all and baby lived on packet baby food, it's what mum wanted, I was 17, who was I to argue!.
Stayed 2 years, child calls my parents nan and grandad and calls them from Australia every month. I keep. In touch via facebook (remind him if a birthday/anniversary is coming up!)

Wouldn't change a thing, the reference from mum was so glowing and it got me some excellent jobs!
