Holiday nanny

Hello,

We had a lovely nanny to look after our children from when DS was 1 to when he started school last september when we made her redundant and all parted on good terms.

We've kept in touch, and she now has a job nannying for a teacher who doesn't need childcare in the school holidays. We do need childcare for the holidays and she has asked if we would like her to come back for the summer.

I'm happy with this but would like some advice on the best way to manage it. Does it need to be a nanny share? Should she sign up through an agency to manage tax/insurance etc or do I need to join nanny tax (which I'm slightly reluctant to do for about 4 weeks of childcare!)

Any advice would be very gratefully received.

If she is only looking after your children during that time she is your nanny not part of a nanny share. Yes you wil need to pay tax and ni on the wages you pay her for that period, ring who ever you used to use and explain to them and hopefully they will offer you a much reduced amount for only one or two months payroll run.

As she has another job, regardless of the amount of salary you pay, you will need to register as an employer and do PAYE.
Payroll companies do often now offer a reduced rate if employment is for less than 3 months. You can do payroll yourself using HMRC online tools, or payroll software.
Nannynick mentioned something called BrightPay as it was free for a small employer.

You can do a fixed term contract as you will know the start and end dates and you can calculate holiday and they can take that holiday during the time or you can pay it at end of the fixed contract.

A nannyshare is when two families share a nanny At The Same Time, so that would not be the situation here. It would be her second job, so no tax free personal allowance allocated, so very important to agree a Gross salary.

Thank you very much - this is really helpful. She will ethnically continue to be employed by her current employer - ie she'll go back to her usual job in September so I guess I'll need some consent from her employer. Will dhe need yo tell her insurers?

Sorry about the spelling. Definitely effectively! Not ethnically.

If she is a term time only nanny then she should be free to find work in the holidays without their permission but if she is meant to cover some holiday time as well then yes prob best to speak to them and just check she will be available the dates you need her. Her insurance will cover her where ever she works no need to tell them of the change but if you will be using vouchers to pay her so she is ofsted teg she should inform them of the change of work address for that period.
