Sitters - Evening Babysitting Agency Questions

I know there have been threads in the past about Sitters Agency, but wonder if anyone who has used them recently can give feedback on your experiences? Pros/cons/how you've found the service, what the sitters are like, things to watch out for/be aware of, etc.

I'm tired of endless ringing around when I want an evening out, and the idea of an agency who can provide good, reliable/sensible sitters when needed is very appealing.....

I work for sitters so I can recommend them!

where are you BTW? I'm in Glasgow.

TheBlonde · 01/11/2006 13:01

We use them intermittently
Only had one problem sitter who helped herself to all sorts of food

If you use them frequently you can usually get the same sitter

Earlybird · 01/11/2006 13:02

Interesting - are they a national coverage agency? I thought they were only in London, which is where I am. Glad to know that you "rate" them.

Anyone else that can give insight?

We are in London too
A friend recommended them and I know others who use them
They work out cheaper than the girls from my local creche who charge 7 quid/hr plus taxi fare home

Kittypickle · 01/11/2006 13:08

Yes have used them and they have all been very good apart from one lady who was local and used to talk and talk when we came back, taking ages to go home. But you can request who you would like and they will try that person first.

Earlybird · 01/11/2006 13:12

Yes, the babysitters I use are now ludicrously expensive - and often unavailable. Sometimes I have to weigh up how badly I want a night out as the babysitter/cab fare home combination can cost just as much, or more, than my evening out!

Time for a new approach, so am hoping that Sitters can provide a good alternative solution.

We used them a few times. Seems we were lucky the first time as we had a lovely lady who did puzzles with dd etc and both kids really liked he. But the 3rd time she wasn't available and they sent someone else who just plonked herself down with her magazines and barely seemed to notice the children (both primary age by then) All was fine but I don't think the kids felt that happy(after the other good experiences)so we didn't bother again. But Sitters themselves seemed very professional and well-organised.

Rookiemum · 01/11/2006 13:27

Is there a website for this company as I have used Supermums and found them fine, but this seems to be cheaper ?

TheBlonde · 01/11/2006 13:39

Earlybird - I think there is a mumsnet link to sitters that gets you an initial discount

Sitters have saved my life!

Dh works abroad for great chunks of time and have had about 5 different sitters. Had no problems whatsoever with ANY of them but the kids do have 2 definite favourites - a young trendy nanny and an older mother who reminds them of my mother (but much younger).

We live in a village in North Yorkshire so was mightily relieved when found out that Sitters covered this area. I love it as its guilt free - don't have to drag elderly grandparents out or put them up in my room while I sleep on sofabed on attic landing; no dragging teenagers out on a week night and more importantly as I am on my own a lot - I don't have to escort the sitters home.

First used them when staying with my sister in London and was all nervous but my sister was right when she said that I'd feel reassured as soon as I met the sitter. I did.

welshmum · 01/11/2006 14:04

Hi Earlybird
We have used sitters for the past 4 years now and have 2 we use regularly. They have never let us down and I would recommend them to anyone.
Emmylou is right, the guilt free element is a big draw for me.
Once we were called home as dd had been sick and the sitter was being just so wonderul with her we were even happier with using them because something not so pleasant had happened and they'd dealt with it very well.
Hope you're well and your dd too

I feel that Sitters has a place in the market. They can be very useful for parents who do not go out very often, and whose children are old enough not to be that bothered about who is caring for them.

However, if you intend to go out on a regular basis, as with any form of childcare, having consistancy of carer is very useful, especially if your children are young.

I chatted with a parent recently about this subject and here are some things that were mentioned:

  • used 6 times and had a different sitter each time, which didn't help with young child's bedtime routine.
  • found that a lot of the childcarers liked the child to be already in bed asleep.

That was just one parents experience though, and I expect it does differ from area to area quite a bit, as to what the childcarer providing the babysitting is expecting. Any babysitting agency, especially one as big as Sitters, can not control each 'sitter' they have working for them, thus some will be great... while others will let the side down.

As with all childcare, you compare things on the level of service provided, the cost, and other factors, including how much your children like a particular childcare provider. Sitters fills a gap in the childcare market, making it easy for parents to find a babysitter at quite short notice. To provide that service they rely on a lot of staff, who while vetted, may not all provide the same level of service, thus when a sitter fails to meet your requirements, then make sure you let the agency know.

Thanks to all for feedback (special wave to Welshmum!). Your positive feedback has been most helpful. I've registered and have already had a callback to say that JoAnn is coming to sit for dd on Thursday night when I'll be out at the charity premiere of 'Porgy and Bess'. I'm so excited!

Great to hear you have found yourself a sitter. Do let us know how it goes.

KellyKrueger1978 · 03/11/2006 13:38

hi earlybird, hope it goes well for you. I've used sitters for a few years now, and never had any real problems with them. Just one rather silly lady who kept giving me dd drinks then wondered why she was up for the toilet every half hour! I jsut requested taht she was not sent again, though she was a very nice person and lovely to the kids.
I do tend to have mine all in bed before the sitter arrives, I feel happier with that, and they can check on them during the evening or sort them out if they wake.

bambi06 · 03/11/2006 13:38

check out local childcare coleges for babysitters,we have regular ones and out two kids dont want to go to bed if they know they have babysitters as they re so good with kids and genuinely want to play with them plus as they are students they are very appreciative for some earnings plus they dont charge a lot as they are only students trying to gain expereience
