By babysitting do you mean of a evening in your own home?

Cornonthecob · 21/03/2015 12:04

Some nannies could accept them for that. The problem I see though is that the amount involved for babysitting is often quite low. Can you get a voucher issued for a small amount?

Also the childcarer would need to be registered on the childcare voucher providers system already. They could register with the voucher company but that may take time.

If you don't get anywhere, I found that I lot of holiday camp/club places take them.
(we also have a stock as I forgot to tell DH to cancel them when pre-school became free)

Don't see why not as you just tell your voucher company who the cm or nanny will need to be reg with how much to transfer over. The only problem you may have is it takes 4-5 working days for the money to be in their account but if they don't mind that it should be fine. I am a nanny and would happily take vouchers for babysitting.

I expect some childminders don't accept them. Usually babysitting is done as a favour and paid in cash. If you pay in vouchers a childminder would have to put them through their accounts (and therefore it would count as income and be taxable).
Not that it affects me as I don't do evenings..

Maryann1975 · 21/03/2015 17:49

I'm a childminder and as long as I was already registered with the company that had issued them, I would accept them. I wouldn't go through the hassle of registering with another company so I could accept them. It was a a bit of a faff registering with one of the companies and they have been rubbish with problems, so wouldn't want to go through that again.

cogitosum · 22/03/2015 09:23

The problem is whether their ofsted registration would cover them in the evening in your home. I doubt it would but willing to be corrected.

Tanith · 22/03/2015 10:56

I would not accept them. Vouchers are intended to help pay for childcare while you work and they are ultimately taxpayer-funded.
I think you should check carefully with your voucher company before you try to use them in this way.

TeddyBear5 · 22/03/2015 11:02

I would not accept them.

Perk of babysitting is cash on the night, not waiting a week for payment.

Vouchers can be issued in any amount though so that wouldn't be an issue.

PhoebeMcPeePee · 22/03/2015 21:37

I wouldn't as I agree cash in hand for a couple of hours babysitting is why most people do it. Out of pocket for fuel & waiting a week for payment then losing 20% to the tax man - frankly I wouldn't bother

OutragedFromLeeds · 22/03/2015 22:04

I'm a nanny, but I accept childcare vouchers and other nannies I know do as well.

I only do it if it's a family I know well (and can trust to actually pay) and if I'm already registered with the voucher company (I would register specially if it were to be a regular arrangement, but not for a one off). Whenever I've done this the family have paid over the odds to compensate for the delay/hassle (rounding £35 up to £50 for example).
