We're thrilled with our newish nanny (7 weeks)... am I right to think we should get her a birthday present from the kiddos? perhaps have them make a card (3yo, 1yo) and then a voucher to a restaurant to movies?

But no mother's day present, right?

Speaking as an ex-nanny (long, long, ago)...

No Mother's Day present.
But yes, definitely a birthday present and a card from the kids. This sort of thing makes a nanny feel loved and wanted.

I have STILL got the farewell present from one of my nannying jobs - almost thirty years ago.

No mothers day gift.

Gifts that have gone down well are; gift vouchers for spa, posh toiletries, cosy slippers, yummy chocolates, jewelry box, gift voucher for favourite shop etc

Thanks ladies!

From employers I have had books, slippers, a box of baking gear (I enjoy baking and there were some things in there to use with the kiddo), a gift voucher for a local retail outlet. All have gone down really well because they were personal and showed that they really knew me and what I liked - even the birthday present bought for me just 2 weeks after I started with them!

But yes, no mother's day gift.

Not on the high street is a good website for personalising stuff from the children to the nanny. We also get her Christmas presents. My nanny has been here for a while now so at Easter I even buy her children an egg each and her posh chocs but that's because she feels like part of the family. The main thing is to show she is treasured.

No mother's day present.

Yes to a birthday present and card. I'd go for a token gift from the children, something they've made/painted etc. and a generic voucher (Amazon or love2shop or something can be used for a range of things) unless you know what she'd like. Don't have a guess on anything too specific.

Be careful on how much you spend. If more than 50 pounds over the tax year, you have to declare it and your nanny will be taxed on it. And the fines for not declaring are large

meggleshs · 25/03/2015 13:22

Is it £50 total for the year, or £50 each? Ie Can I give her £50 for her Bday and then £50 for Xmas? Or only £25 each?

And speaking of Christmas, what is the guidance/ normal procedure for bonus? 1 week's salary?
